I have a 88 Pioneer, the top part of the Comanche emblem on the front fender is in line with the top of the fender flare; the 4X4 emblem is in line with the door handle.

Cut a cardboard template to the above dimensions following the door gap as a guide.  You can use it on both sides to make sure they are even (not that anyone will see both sides at once, but you would still know if they were different).  That's how I put mine on the truck

The position is lower that I thought. Why do people install then so close to the top fold? Why doesn't the Service Manual give the location? It looks like it's in line with the top fender flare in an illustration in the manual?

I have three MJs ('88, '89 & '90) I know for a fact the '90 emblem placement is factory (original owner) and the other two are within a tenth of an inch of that one, so I'm sure the above picture is accurate. If they were in line with the top of the flare they would sit right under the PIONEER stripe.
