Next Parts?

Hey guys. Looking for input now the next parts to order for my mj. I already have the ax15 trans. 

My main concern is my transfer case. I have a np242 with a 21 spline input, so I have to get a 23 spline. Since I would have the tcase apart should I get the sye too? I know mjs don't really need them, but I thought since the tcase would be apart why not.

 

**if I don't get the sye I would just order all the parts to swap in the ax15

Go to Tom Woods site, look at SYEs and DS. Unless you are going to hack something together.........cost for SYE will likely run you over $1000.

 

You will need a new front DS.........another $350. 

 

I would not bother with the 242......but that's me.........you are in FL, no need nor use for the 242. Pick up a good 231 for $150 and be done with it. 

 

Not to mention you'll have to set up your rear for the cardan joint. 

And, there is no reason for any of it. 

 

Besides, you still have the 4 banger in front of all this..........all the more reason to keep it simple.

Depending how high you go you don’t need an sye...

if your going to try and swap to a 23 spline you might as well buy an np231 from a later model xj and be done with it...

i got mine for $40 off craigslist and all I did was just add oil and go...

 

Is your truck already 4wd or your making that swap as well? 

 

Also, if you have the thicker driveshaft you may need to consider having a new one made...

florida driveline down in medley does driveshafts...

When your ready to get driveshafts measured give them a call for prices or just go there personally

@Jeep Driver  i got the np242 from the parts cherokee I had from when I first got the mj. I didnt want to get a new tcase but I can be persuaded. 

Arent the shiftgates different between an 231 and a 242. 

 

The sye kit for the 242 is abput $480 from rusty's offroad before shipping and a driveshafts

Swapping it as well. I have already found a np231 that I could possibly get

Wow that’s hefty, 

you can get an sye for the np231 from adams drive shaft for $170 and maybe an extra $10 shipped

The 231 lever and shift gate are common on the Cherokees...

 

 

 

The lever part with the shift gate? Are they the same between the 2 tcases, or am I mistaken?

You've got a very ambitious project for a full time college student part-time employment

Every thread I've read where guys have cheaped out why not paying for it later I would not trust an Sye $ 170 and you still have to buy a drive shaft

I think it's Minkey boy who has the 2.5 on 35s which is supercharged I would contact him and see exactly how much money he's invested in his and if he's honest with you several thousands of dollars probably a lot more than you can imagine

I'm sure you're going to want to run at least 35 if you are a six and a half inch your 2.5 is not going to be happy with you even if you regear to 488

 

It's none of my business it's your project just hate to see you get deep into this and not be able to finish

I'm probably going to run 33s, just because less wear and tear, cheaper tires, and plus I already have a set at my house. 

Still going to do 6.5" lift, may go down to 4.5 but not 100% sold on that idea. 

I was also planning to go to 513s.

 

I was trying my best to no cheap out and right the first time around so I wouldnt have to worry much about it drive trian wise

I read that as well on multiple forums but I also read that the difference between a 488 and 513 is one more tooth on the pinion. I heard theres no difference in strength

I have a NP219 which are 23 spline input but they are shallow so I need a 1” spacer/clocking ring to run it with HO AW4 or AX-15 but not the Jeep/Mopar 727 (which it came with stock)
It’s already fixed yoke outputs front and rear plus they were built for AMC V8s. Stronger than the NV249 in Grand Cherokees and they have an E-drive where front/rear are locked in 4 high or full time for highway driving.

With my swap and “cheaping out” on a used trans with a bad 2nd gear synchro

i was in close to a grand...and that’s doing the work myself and sourcing parts in the junkyard and replacing to new parts on nessacery parts...

And it bit me in the rear after 3rd gear synchro went out and having to buy a good condition nv3550/a b&m short shifter so add about another grand to that...

The only reason I went to 4.88s instead of 5.13s is that the shops I’ve called for gear work complained that 5.13s you’d have to cut into the Dana 30 to make it fit
