Pete M
yes! we gave great thought to that (at the time my grandpa was on O2 and the concept of near-instant power return was appealing) but went with a "portable" unit instead because I was near him 24/7 at the time and it'd be easy to switch to an emergency tank while I fried up the voltage. It weighs a ton, but does 240 (for welding ) and has a 5 gal tank for lots of hours of runtime. I could run everything in this house including the ac (just not all at once). mostly what it does is prevent power outages. we haven't had one since buying it that last longer than a couple hours. HOrnbrod
They are not really that expensive, and I've been giving it some serious thought. Don't need "whole house" power, just the essentials to keep the beer cold and run the heat pump if needed. A small 10Kw propane unit would be fine. With our local Mom and Pop power company, power outages are pretty frequent here, although they usually don't last long.
Jeep Driver
Looks line Tampa get a reprieve. I'd consider a small diesel unit, more efficient. Actually, I'd like a have a 3pt unit for my little tractor.

A 10kw would almost power your house but it's the starting of appliances a 2.5 ton 14 seer ac pulls about 35 amps starting. If you run your heat avg 10 kw heat strip is drawing 40+ amps so now 10kw not enough add in everything else. Just FYI 16kw and 22 kw are only about 200 bucks different in price because the 22 kw comes with the transfer switch. I install them for 7200. Owner is responsible for ng or lpg hook up from a gas company. Best way is to do a load test so you get proper size I recommend 25%bigger your Neighbors will wanna run a cord to there stuff or if you grow your homeSent from my Z981 using Tapatalk
HOrnbrod
Yep, what you are saying makes perfect sense regarding the A/C start-up amps and heat strip load. Plus the 25% over total load overbuild. Still in the planning stages - thanks. You have one on your own house? Maybe running right now I suspect? Pete M
lost power for a few hours. came back on around dinner time just as I was preparing to fire up the genny. I mean, literally while I was walking towards the door. the trees were really dancing out there, but it seems all we lost were small branches. whew! Pete M
that had to suuuuuuck looks like I spoke too soon about our slice of woods. had a tree fall out in the back acre. of course it didn't just fall over, it snapped about 15 ft up and is still attached. that'll be fun to deal with, but not until winter. right now that area is owned by the ticks and mosquitoes. I don't get visitation rights back until late october.
