DTA Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 Went to fire up the 89 for the first time in about 2 months and immediately noticed a hissing noise coming from around the gas tank upon start up. It stays constant until shutdown. Any ideas on what could be causing the noise?
Fernando87mj Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 Fuel pump maybe ,id start small and replace the fuel filter , it might be partially clogged.
DTA Posted July 18, 2017 Author Posted July 18, 2017 Fuel pump maybe ,id start small and replace the fuel filter , it might be partially clogged. Would a plugged filter cause the tank to produce a hissing noise? I replaced the fuel filter about 2k
Fernando87mj Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 Maybe that's what I'm thinking , maybe it's overworking the fuel pump and causing it to be loud .It wouldn't hurt to try there first, fuel filters aren't that expensive for these beasts.

It sounds like a stand alone noise, as i can clearly hear the pump humming away then this hissing noise overtop of it. I have a newer filter on one of my other comanches, maybe i'll try a switch it in tomorrow and see what i get
Gene Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 Possibly a split in the rubber hose in the tank? You are hearing a small amount of fuel leaking at high pressure? Gene
aaronbtxnc Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 How about the gas cap or filler neck sucking air?
a bum with money Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 I really like your front grill look. Do you have a link you can refer me To? One that would have most of the details involved in the change over (electrical, mechanical, doner, custom). HOrnbrod Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 Sounds like the vapor canister or the tank vent(s) may be clogged. Try disconnecting the line going to the fuel tank at the canister in the engine bay while running and see if the hissing goes away.

It's a Jeep Cherokee Wagoneer front clip. 100% bolt on, just make sure you get the headlight harness for easy plug and play https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/wagoneer-front-nose-conversion-39810/

The canister was pulled from the truck long ago, I'll have to crawl under there and do some poking around. It was the first time iv'e started it since my axle shaft flew out on the highway and i just got everything back in working order. Wouldn't think loosing the axle shaft and the truck dipping onto the axle would mess something up around the tank
