lcoutback Posted June 11, 2017 Posted June 11, 2017 Hey all, I've poked around here and not found the answer, though I'm sure it's already noted. I recently purchased a 1988 2wd MJ that I'm going to convert to 4wd. It has the AW-4 transmission. I've located a 1990 donor XJ, and wonder if the 1990 transfer case bolts to my AW-4? (XJ is an automatic also) How do I know without actually tearing them apart and counting splines on the output? Also, my MJ just has idiot lights in the cluster and the donor XJ has gauges. Are these interchangeable? (I know '91 and newer are not) Thanks!
Crash Posted June 11, 2017 Posted June 11, 2017 2WD AW4 is different than 4WD. You should be able to swap the donor AW4/tcase though. Gauges will swap. You will need CTS at rear of head for temp gauge to work, and oil pressure sending unit from donor vehicle for oil gauge to work. Basically, plug n pray.
ParadiseMJ Posted June 11, 2017 Posted June 11, 2017 Just like Crash says...you'll need a 4x4 tranny as well as the transfer case. A transfer case won't bolt to a 4x2 tranny. You'll also need a different tranny mount, cross member and a shorter drive shaft. So the AW4 you have now will need to be be completely removed anyway. Tearing it all apart is mandatory anyway.
lcoutback Posted June 11, 2017 Author Posted June 11, 2017 Thanks so much! Glad I rolled the dice and bought the $300 donor!
BrownBetty85 Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 Good luck with that I'm doing pretty much the same but motor and all so I have entire wire harness to do also but have done before the donor XJ was the receiver 7 years ago for 93 into an 85. Oh this addiction can make you a gluten for punishment!!
