DirtyDeeds
so I'm about to rebuild and re gear my rear end to match my D30 up front but I'm not sure what axle it is, i originally thought it was a C8.25, but i was looking for the tag that might have the gear ratio on it when i noticed DANA stamped on the cover above the year of manufacture. also the shape of the cover looks a little more like the D35. can i get a positive id so i can order the proper gears? HOrnbrod
It's your money, but don't waste it regearing a D35 mate. Look around for a good used D44, 8.25, Ford 8.8, etc. first. What ratio are you looking for?

What ratio are you looking for? I'm not sure, I'm rebuilding my d30 high pinion this weekend and I'm looking to match the rear to the front. my mj was originally 2wd 5spd and my donor d30 is from my old 95 cherokee sport with a auto trans so i know the ratios most likely don't match. my d30 dosnt have the tag with the gear ratio any more so i won't know till i can count teeth while I'm re doing it
Eagle
If the '95 XJ was a 4.0L the ratio is 3.55 (or 3.54). If it was a 2.5L the ratio is probably 4.10.

I will second the advice to look for a 97+ 8.25..........or other.......... You'll be dollars ahead and fewer headaches.

I'm just trying to get it off road as cheap as possible for the time being. i found this used set online http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Dana-35-ring-and-pinion-gears-46131-48181-39-11-3-55-ratio-gear-Tj-XJ-WJ-/401219911454?hash=item5d6a91ff1e:g:qygAAOSwKOJYHJP7&vxp=mtr it should hold me over for a little while, I'm moving into a house in a few months then ill get a good 8.25. should i wait to conform the ratio in my d30 before ordering anything or should the ratio be pretty set? my xj was stock besides having 31's on it so i doubt any one did any swapping
DirtyDeeds
from what I'm reading here the d35 in there should have 3.07 gears. ive read some of the carriers are different and some times you have to find matching ones. will the 3.55 ring mount to the 3.07 carrier? There can be anything in there after all the years and owners. Just pop the cover and take a peek. The gear oil needs changing anyhow.

dante2
How bad do you need the 4wd? How about just bolting in the axle without the front shaft until you can get a better axle? I plan on swapping in parts to make mine 4wd but I will have to do it as money permits. I have been running my YJ without the front shaft for awhile due to a bolt broke off in the yoke.
