94+ Timing Set on 91 4.0

Someone refresh my memory. Can you use the 94+ "silent chain" style timing chain and sprockets on a 91 4.0 engine? The old "bicycle chain" is NLA from Chrysler, and I've heard the later sets are an upgrade. The new style chain and sprockets are still available, and somewhat reasonably priced.

One of our saving graces........

 

2.5 and 4.0 internals are mostly all the same, timing sets, oil pumps, con rods, push rods, rockers, pistons,  tappets,....etc......regardless of year. 

 

 

FWIW to you, I purchased a Mopar Performance double roller, came in a Mopar package, was Cloyes.

Yeah, the 64-link "silent" chains and sprockets are supposed to be stronger than the 93 and below 48-link roller chains. I have the Mopar silent chain FWIW. It's not silent either. :yes:

Was your Mopar chain tight? I've had 2 Cloyes sets be sloppy out of the box, and before I drop $100 on a new Mopar silent set I want to be sure that won't happen (and be sure it isn't just an aftermarket part in a mopar box). The Cloyes chain I have now is only a little bit tighter than the original and announces its presence loudly.

It was installed at Hesco while I was there on a new build. The Mopar "silent" timing set was optional with extra cost; the Cloyes set was the standard offering for the strokers. Needless to say it was a lot tighter than the original roller set. It's a little noisier now than when it was new but it has ~70K on it, so I figure that's normal.

 

Stating the obvious, Mopar (and Ford, GM, and all the others) outsource their manufacturing a lot more nowadays. What used to be genuine Mopar (whatever that means) is not always the case. I needed a coil in a hurry awhile back, went to the dealer and opened the Mopar box and stamped on the Mopar coil was "Made in China". I didn't buy it. I like to think that if it comes in a Mopar box and it's aftermarket, the QC during development and manufacturing is tighter than an aftermarket part. Maybe wishful thinking though...

The cloyes chain sets are crap now, made in China.  I ordered one for my 98 gmc truck when doing the cam, it had more slop than the stock chain with over 100k miles.  They used to be great and tight as a drum.

 

I would go to local parts houses bring sets home and whichever set has the least defliecton use.

I only get my hard parts from Summit or Jeggs or Mopar.

One from a local parts store, one from RockAuto. The parts store one was a little less sloppy, but both were still almost as loose as the 160k at the time factory set. Easily 1/2" or more of deflection in all three of them. Looking back on it I never should have installed the one I did, but I needed it running. I won't buy another new production Cloyes part again - if the Mopar ones are just the Cloyes part store sets in a different box I'll hold out for NOS.
