Robert K
hello all..I have a 91 mj sport 4x4 i would like to put 33'sx12.5 on with no rubbing or cutting. The axles are out of a 2003 grand cherokee laredo..so my questions are 1) how much lift would be needed. 2) will the front axle be a bolt in. 3) any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...hope this work I'm not a computer guy
Dzimm
I don't think it's going to be easy to give you a definitive answer on how much lift you'll need. It may vary between one MJ/XJ to another. Usually I hear that at 3" you can fit 33s but may need to do some trimming yet and how much will vary again between trucks. Usually people will go 4.5" and then they SHOULD fit fine with no cutting or rubbing on the fender. With the tires being that wide you may also need to run spacers to keep them from rubbing anything on the axle as well. As for the axles bolting right up, my first instinct is to say maybe with some minor modification but then again I don't have experience with that axle. If you have access to the new axle you want to use, take measurements on your current axle and compare that to the 03 Grand and see if everything matches up. Especially the location of the front differential as your driveline needs to remain the same. I can't imagine it would be too terribly different given its an 03 but like I said, I don't have experience with this axle. You'll also want to keep in mind that the gear ratio probably won't match the rear so you'll want to find out what the ratio is so you can get it regeared to match if it is different. As for other advice, let us know what axle the 03 Grand is. There was different versions of axle used, I'm sure, so knowing which one you want to use will make a difference. Also do a Google search to see if there is any writeups on this already. You are more likely to come across this swap done on an XJ but it will be the same on the MJ since the front ends are exactly the same. If you can upload pictures of the new axle it may make helping easier for us. There is a few ways to upload pictures. Easiest to do if you use a smart phone is the app Tapatalk otherwise there is a thread in the forum problems section here on how to post them using photo sharing sites. It's titled Picture Hosting. I'm sure others will chime in that may have more experience on a swap like this and give you more information.

desbennett004
You are putting the rear GC axle in as well? Isn't that coil sprung? Sent from my SM-N900W8 using Tapatalk
MeanLemons
Please don't do it. That aluminum dana 44 axles are a joke. Get yourself a real dana 44 from a real jeep. WJ grand Cherokees belong to the scrap yard.

WyoCherokee
i believe ruff stuff or tnt customs sell coil buckets for the frame. you will need those. if i remember correctly the stock GC rear coils will allow mounting to the xj/mj clearance wise. for 33's you will want 3-4" GC coils, as they are stiffer than xj front coils. SBpunk
Look into SOA lifts and grab yourself either a cheap 8.25 or do it right and get an 8.8 with 4:10 gears. You'll only have to regear the front and save yourself some cash. D30's with 4:10s are like finding a 4 leaf clover being held by a dinosaur in a diamond mine while drinking good beer in Oklahoma. Get some spacers for the back wheels and upgrade the brake pads then call it a day.

desbennett004
I used a 98 XJ as my donor. You got a HP Dana 30 with larger U joints for the front, and a 29 spline Chrysler 8.25 for the rear, which is comparible in strength to a D44. Problem is you are pretty much stuck with 3.55 gears from factory, which is ok with 33's, but could be better. You can re gear, but that's money.
