Where is the Tranny Drain Plug?

Hey guys 

i have a 86 MJ with a 3 speed A904 tranny 

i put to much tranny fluid in it 

i was wondering where the drain plug was so i can remove some of the fluid

ive been looking all over for it and can't find it (most likely because of how dirty it is)

also i have 4WD just to let you guys know

nope that's a pan drop. people have talked about adding a plug in to the pan. if you added to much, crack the seal on pan and dribble it out, and hope it will tighten backup and seal.

ok so are you saying i have to remove the drain pan (1st pic)

and allow some of the fluid to drip out 

or is there some proper way of allowing it to come out 

once the pan is removed?

 

 

also if i drive it with to much fluid will it ruin the tranny

or will it just cause the tranny to slip

seems like your pan is already leaking from the pan seal, or is that you that let some drip out? There is no right way of letting just a little out. I just thought you could crack the bolts loose and let is drip out enough to get to where you want to be no need to remove pan. running to much fluid can cause excess pressure and can cause any leaks to become worse. If that is your seal on pan leaking, I would say just do the filter and gasket replacement, fix the leak and then you can fill to normal.

Yep, then you'll also have a chance to clean it up.  Crack the pan at the lowest corner to allow it to dribble out into a catch pan.  You could even re-use the fluid.  I usually pour it through a paint strainer...kind of like a big coffee filter.  Open the pan a little more as it drains,  If you have a big enough catch pan, then take the pan all the way off and let it drain completely.  The filter holds about 8 oz.

yes the oil pan gasket is probably bad

so i will just crack it open let it all drip out

put it back on with a new gasket

and fill it up to the correct level

 

when i check what the fluid level is 

do i have to have the vehicle running 

and does the vehicle have to be on a straight leveled road

because my drive way is on a slant like a hill

 

also i will post a pic of the dip stick 

can anyone tell me where exactly does the full line begin?

so from what i have read you must be in between the two lines

but it helps if your closer to the full line

No. It should be at the line just left of FULL.

The x's don't mean anything.  They're just hatch marks to "hold" on to the fluid to make it easier to read.

ok got it i will fill it up to the full line

does anybody know if the transfer case has tranny fluid in it as well?

ok so I'm assuming that the transfer case uses the same tranny fluid as the actual transmission

Go ahead and prepare to just drop the pan ( new fluid, new gasket ) and....

 

Add one of these

 

 

where it makes sense...lowest point when sitting level and that has no chance of being easily ripped off or interfering with anything.
