Oil Pan Gasket Types

Recommended Posts

I know everyone on the internet says use the Fel-pro blue gasket but Summit doesn't carry them.  Does anyone have experience with the Victor Reinz gasket from them?  It's molded silicone, unsure if it has a steel core or not.  I did read somewhere that they tend to be very stiff so that leads me to believe they do.  Just was wondering if anyone had any experience before I bought it.

I just searched Auto Zone, Advance Auto and Napa.  All three list the Fel-Pro gasket.  I don't know if these stores are near you, thou.  Prices ranged from $20 to $30.

I was told by parts-jockey that the oil pan gasket has not changed from the '70s until the end of the 4.0 in 2006.  So, this part should be easy to source.

Have used both brands, Fel-Pro and Victor Reinz.

Both worked and, when installed correctly, should install without major difficulty and not leak.

Normally very personally particular about how to install but have done several 6 cylinders in trucks and none have been fun and all forced me to

try "new things" to get them installed. ( Disconnecting motor mounts and exhaust, drooping front axles. )

IMHO the FP just seems a little better made, somewhat thicker/firmer material, especially at the front and back of the pan.

In my area there is about a $5 - $7 premium for the FP over the VR.

That's incorrect. The early 4.0L engines used a multi-part pan gasket that had to be sealed with silicone where the parts met. Often, it didn't work. Somewhere in the 90s Jeep changed to a one-piece pan gasket. The newer gasket works on all years and is far superior to the old, multi-part gasket.

I think they changed the gaskets, both oil pan and valve cover for the '96 redesign of the 4.0L. An advantage with the newer pan gasket is if you replace the timing chain, you don't have to splce in the gasket tabs. I haven't installed my Fel-Pro silicon valve cover gasket yet. Looks good though. Using a 93-95 GC valve cover on a '98 XJ. Had a lot of problems with plain cork gaskets on the MJ.
