What would you do?

Recommended Posts

Realisticly, if this faced you tomarrow.

I don't make a lot of money, ($130 a week, I'm 17 working at a pizza place) My insurance is $70 a month.

Right now I have $550 in the bank. With a $200 refund coming soon. I hate having no money in the bank.

My rearend blew again today. The first time it was my fault, this time it was completely random. One of the spider gears split coming out of my driveway and took out the carrier and the rest of the spider gears.

The local junkyard that is cheap, doesnt have what I need. No others are anything special.

Here are my options.

A. Spend $200 on a XJ rearend (for my MJ) and use the guts to fix my rearend. (Carrier and spider gears) Throw away the rest of the rearend since no one buys them here.

Pros: Simple, cheapest option

Cons: Still stuck with the D35 spiders that I have problems with for some reason. And still have a open diff. Have to set up gears. (Done it, but not any fun)

B. Spend about $500 on a 8.8. and swap that in.

Pros: Stronger rear, better brakes

Cons: Expensive, its a $1000 truck pretty much, still have an open diff.

C. Buy a full carrier locker (Detroit) About $400

Pros: Stronger? (No spider gears) Break simple axle shafts instead of spiders. (I only have 31s), I have a locker, locked rear end, locker.

Cons: Have to set up gears, Kinda expensive.

D. Suck it up and wait for the axle fairy to bring a XJ with what I need and install that $25 carrier.

So what would you do?

Hell, I have a XJ D35 sittin' here I will GIVE YOU!!! But your a distance away.....

I would fix it as cheaply as possible and begin saving for a 8.8, 8.25 or D44!

I am seroius about the D35..PM if you want to work something out. OH, its got 3:07 gears BTW...

What you want to figure out is your plan for your MJ and rebuild the rear to that plan .

The best option would be the 8.8 ( unless you find an MJ d44 )for the long term toughness. another option would be to find an XJ chrysler 8.25 ( 98+have 29 spline shafts ) that would be an easier find.

Being as you have limited cash flow the 8.25 would be the best option , Just consider though everytime I or other people I know have tried to do anything on the "cheap to get by" usualy resulted in haveing to do it again.

good luck

I would try and figure out why you keep blowing spider gears. what is actually breaking?

A new D35 open carrier is like 35 bucks from Supplee 4WD. The you will need spider gears, they should be cheap as well, or you can go buy a lock right and hope you don't start busting shafts.

If you can find some one with a good bearing puller, you could re-use your old bearings, and swap your gears onto the new carrier. Where I live at the Pick A part sells diffs for 27 bucks, so used might be an option for you. They also sell whole axles for 120. Which if your lucky you can get a 8.8 for that and as long as it is attatched to the axle it goes with it.

go cheap you can buy a carrier for cheap and put new spider gears in but make sure you get the little washers that set behind the spider gears to

for if you don't they could bind and break again

save your money for a better axle and a lift

with a locker and 31's you shouldnt break axles left and right

a freind has a locker and 33's in her yj with the dana 35 and she hasnt

broke an axle yet

she does wheel it pretty hard the tubes are twisting

thets ok she's putting 60's in it soon

I will check in my shed, I might have some "spare" d35 spider gears, if I do, you can have them for what shipping will cost. I probrably threw them out cause none of my stuff has a d35 in them anymore :?

I bent the tubes on 2 different axles, before I upgraded to a better axle.

 Do you plan on upgrading shafts? Also are your shafts c-clip or non? Either way do your self a favor and build an upper truss for your axle to keep the tubes from bending. Might also help you if you get a spare set of shafts. Remember the nonc-clip ones you have to keep the bearings clean and dry for them to be any good in a bind. I found that cling wrap, and duct tape work really well for that :D

An 8.8 shouldn't cost $500, even with 4.10s.

I ask around $385 for them with 4.10 and a limited slip, and about $300 with 3.73s.

I have an XJ D44 that I have list for $375, and ask the same for the MJ D44s when I find them...
