Gene
Hi everyone, 88 Comanche 4.0, Dana 35 rear axle. Looks like the left rear seal is leaking, lubricant starting to run onto the brake backing plate. Any way to change this without a hydraulic press? Any tips or write ups? Thanks Gene
yxmj
You do not need a press....the old one is fubar so you do not need to be nice to it (there are removers avaliable.. I use a pry bar)..the new just needs to be gently installed with a hammer and appropriately sized block....of course this is with the axle out
HOrnbrod
Before you do anything make sure the axle vent line is clear. Mine was stopped up at the nylon fitting where it goes into the upper left frame causing a leak at the left rear seal from the pressure. Took the vent hose and fittings all apart, unclogged the junk, no more leak.
Gene
Thanks Don, I will certainly check the vent, it would be nice if it were that simple.... Thanks yxmj, I suspected this but good to have it confirmed. Gene
Rockfrog
Bearing removal - drill hole in bearing retainer (just under size of retainer ring) and cold chisel to snap it. Install - axle shaft in freezer, retainer in the oven. But that was before I swapped an 8.8 in. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
sinkrun
Replace the bearings and seals both while its out. Local drive shaft shop charged me 20.00 to install the new beaing and seal on the shaft which I removed myself. Lots of you tube videos out there to do it your self also.
