RustInMyEye
I'm looking for either a template or measurements of where exactly to cut the firewall for the 97+ steering shaft. I know its up and to the right(as seen from in the engine bay). Also, that its the same diameter hole. Has anyone ever made like a paper template that can be printed or anything? The best trick i have seen is to cut a section out of a 97+ cherokee, bolt it up matching the brake booster and spray paint an outline where it needs to be cut. I don't have that luxury, my xj met the crusher 2 years ago now. But like lets say someone could go out and draw a square around it and measure its upward and sideways movement. Oh look i ms painted this to help. Basically I'm looking for the green line and blue line measurements. Measured as if there was a square held as the red lines touching the original holes other sides. Thanks for any help. I might make a template myself after I'm done. and put it in here to be printed. So long as the individual knows how to print files true to size...
87Chief
Do you not have a junkyard near you? I guess not since you mentioned it, but I'm going today and if I remember I'll get some measurements and take pictures.

RustInMyEye
Thanks that would help a lot. I have about a million other things to do before I make this cut honestly. But Its been on my mind since I don't have the facts for actually doing it
cody4359
I just die ground out what was needed for the steering shaft to clear, then put up the new seal, and drilled the holes if I remember right. Believe I welded in a piece of filler and called it a day Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
87Warrior
Best I can do. Cut out of a 99. Made a template from the inside. (sorry that was 3+ years ago and rats got the paper) I used a hole saw to cut the shaft location out of my MJ then used the same hole saw to cut a crescent moon piece from the 99 firewall to fill in the old MJ hole. RustInMyEye
Yeah I've seen that drawing before floating around the internet. I need the measurements of how much it moves. I guess I was hoping to catch someone mid build who has the xj piece cut out and was about to made the cuts on their Mj.
87Warrior
I think a patient person could scale the image and use it as the template. I can easily take a few measurements from my modified firewall.

cody4359
Dunno, I'm not.good.with computers and other then weekends I'm working too many hours to get anything done. The template is just from 2 of the brake booster bolts for reference so I didn't have to pull it to drill/cut/weld on the drivable one. Again, I'm slow but you could pm me your address and I can see if I can get it to fit in an envelope Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
RustInMyEye
Thanks for the offer. Last night a reread a few of the 97+ swap threads and one person did mention that it is 1 inch closer towards the break booster. And when i think about it its just the steering column which has many pivots in it so if its off a little i'm sure it won't really matter. I guess I'm prepared just to wing it now. and id assume the mounting holes are more important then the actual big hole, which is just for the shaft to pass through with a boot around it. I can figure out the mounting holes just passed off the bracket that bolts there.

If so, I’d like to pay to have it shipped to me so I can make a digital file of it for people to run off at staples of FedEx office on 24x36 paper to use on their project. You up for sending it to me if I pay shipping? Also, if you don’t have one does anyone else on here have one that I can use to make a template that we can throw up here for others to find in the future?
