Tranny rebuild

Last September I swapped in an ax15 into my Comanche and I love it but it leaks like a sieve and the first and reverse synchros are pretty shot. I went to a tranny shop asking for pricing in a rebuild thinking that it's be around 500$ but boy was I wrong. 1500$. I do most things myself, so would this be a feasible job for me? Or would I be easier and cheaper to find another ax15 and just do seals? Thanks

Sounds like you answering your own question....Replace and save your current tranny, then with the $1200 you saved by installing a $300 JY unit, rebuild/service your original with new oil, seals and small parts.

You ended up buying a parts XJ for all the 4WD conversion parts, right?  From what I remember finding the first AX-15 was no easy feat in your neck of the woods.  Is the $1500 the price if they R&R it?  Changing the sychros will require a press, etc and that portion of the job is prob best done by a tranny shop. Removing the case & separating the shafts isn't too bad...I tore a 2WD AX-15 down just to see how it went together.

 

  If you're inclined and the tranny shop is game I'd see if you can take the assembled shafts to them and have them service the synchros & bearings on the shafts, then handle the rest of the disassembly/reassembly yourself.
