Back of cab trim?

Recommended Posts

This is more of a curiosity question, I've been looking at pictures and of course, all the interior photos are of the dash/seats. My Comanche came with a bench but years ago we took it out and modified later year Cherokee buckets to fit. I cut some headliner carpet and glued it to the back of the cab and it has that long plastic trim piece the covers the carpet edge. But for the life of me, I can't remember if there was something there before I glued the carpet down. If you got stock buckets was it just bare metal or was there an extended trim piece?

Jess,

My truck is a base 91 long bed and a bench seat.   It it came with plastic under the rear window trim about 4 to 6 inches wide.  It had a headliner from the factory.  Under the rear window plastic trim was painted sheet metal all the way down to the factory rubber floor mat.

I have seen other, non base trucks with a trim panel over what is bare sheet metal in my base truck.  The trim panel had color matching cloth cover the same color as the seats.  That trim panel also had small cut outs that to hold the jack/tire wrench, etc.  I have one of these rear trim panels that I recovered with the same material as on the head liner.  One of these days, I will install it.  But I keep telling my self I should put some sound insulation in there be fore I cover it up for good.

If you want to see pictures, send me your email address.

Yes it's the backer board (I guess that is what it's called) . Here is a pic of one I just picked up. It's uninstalled but gives you an idea.

Great pictures!  Notice the mounting brackets at the bottom - I have seen back panel boards with just one mounting bracket and with two mounting brackets from the factory.  Seems to take self tapping screws to hold on to the floor.  Backer board tucks under the plastic trim on the other 3 sides.  Felt on the top of the back side keeps the plastic trim from rattling like crazy.

Thanks guys! I figured there had to be something there but that looks unfamiliar so it must have been missing when I got my truck. I just put a knock off dynamat product on the back ((and whole interior) so I was just going to glue carpet to that but I may check the Pick N Pull and see if I get lucky.

Here's (sorta) what it looks like installed:

The plastic piece goes over it across the top, and it has little hook tabs that secure it to the B-pillar trims. Screws attach it to the cab floor, I forget what size. IIRC, standard on Pioneers and up. Mine originally had nothing there, and the jack instructions sticker was stuck to the back of the cab.

Ditto on mine.  Mine had the jack instructions and a white foam pad glued to the metal cab back, to cushion where the jack mounted.  When I added the factory backer board, I had to peel off the foam pad, as there was one already on the backer board, as seen in the picture above.  My backer had two mounting feet, and they were secured using hex head sheet metal screws (10mm head).  When I installed mine, I didn't bother drilling the holes and using the screws, as the plastic trim on three sides does a good job of keeping it in place.
