Tony el Tigre
Hey everyone. Today I was lucky enough to be pulled over by the sheriff because my brake lights aren't working. I now have a fix it ticket and I'm stumped on how to fix the brake lights. All the lights work (turn signal, hazards, running light, etc) except the brake lights. I checked the fuse box and it looked like there was no problems. I took apart the light fixture and all the bulbs are doing their job. I've read that it could be the turn signal switch or even the brake light switch. I'm not sure which one I should give a shot and are there any other things that could lead to the same problem? Thanks
onlyinajeep726
What year is the Jeep and is it the factory brake system (IE, not been upgraded)?
gogmorgo
Check the connector for the tail light harness. Should be on the driver's side frame rail just behind the rear axle. Also, if a trailer wire harness has been added, it's good to check that as well. You should be able to check the brake light switch before just replacing it and hoping it works. See if it had power to it and if jumping power to the wire going to the brake lights does anything. You're pretty much playing a game of "where does the power stop?". If the bulbs are good (which bulbs are they) then you should work your way up until you find the power.
Tony el Tigre
It's a 1987 base model and the brake system hasn't been upgraded. Bulbs are Philips 1157 (if I read correctly). It's weird that they randomly stopped working since they've always worked. I'm just going to have to play the where does the power stop game for now. SVPete
See if the wire(s) are broken off from the electrical connector for your brake light switch which is activated by your brake pedal. Or hanging on by one or two wire strands? That was my problem.
