mattnw94 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Okay so I just bought my first Comanche! My dream truck! So obviously I am excited but need some tips... It is a 4 speed with a 2.8 motor. I drove it home and, had to call a tow truck not to far into the drive after a horrid noise occurred and started over heating. 1. Does anyone have a 2.8 for sale? 2. Is there a motor that will bolt directly up to the trans? 3. Is there any better options for me as far as a swap goes? --> Any tips are extremely helpful seeing that am not super knowledgeable on Jeeps, more Ford and Chevy
Wiggilez Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I believe that both the gm 3.1 and 3.8 will bolt up to your ax4 with your current bell housing.
Pete M Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 the 3.1 and 3.4 are the ones to look for (mid 90s camaro/firebird or S-10). it's a better block design and will accept all your accessories/exhaust/intake and bolt to the trans. only caveats are that your truck has a mechanical pump on the engine block and so you'll need to add in an inline electrical pump and then your current flywheel will need to be neutrally balanced by a shop (the 3.4 is internally balanced but your 2.8 uses the flywheel as the balancing mechanism). car-part.com can help with junkyard searches

That POS 2.8L is a GM/Chevy engine. As mentioned by Pete, if you're in search of a replacement engine, do yourself the favor and scout out a 3.4L from a mid '90s Camaro or Firebird. It'll be the easiest swap you can do to rid yourself and your MJ of that horrible excuse of an engine. http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Project_XJ/Project_XJ.htm
