88whitemanche Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 What's up fellas So I refreshed my steering on my 98 Xj and was wondering why my steering wheel wouldn't go back to straight even after adjusting it myself and a alignment shop... Then compared it to the one on my Comanche and it looks bent(prebent) but maybe I thought I bought the wrong part #.... Then bought a wholesale priced one and it's the same as the one on my Xj.... Pic of the one installed And the new one compared to the one for my Comanche... Has anyone have this same problem?
Pete M Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 have you run out of threads on the adjustment link?
HOrnbrod Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Also, do you have an adjustable track bar installed on the XJ?
88whitemanche Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 Also, do you have an adjustable track bar installed on the XJ?Yes I do...an iro double shear adjustable track bar have you run out of threads on the adjustment link? No...
87Warrior Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Sounds to me like you need to twist on the adjusting sleeve at the pitman arm some more.
HOrnbrod Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Got a mfg. and part number for the dogleg drag link?
88whitemanche Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 The one installed is an ultra-power ds1310 The other one is api 2610326504

88whitemanche Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 Ok I adjusted the steering wheel...it's as straight as can be and here's the best pic of how close the toe rods ends in the adjuster
HOrnbrod Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I had a problem like that too, only the threads inside the adjuster collar were butting against each other. The solution for me to center the wheel was to re-clock the horn innards. Used the ZJ drag link too and have about the same distance between the thread ends now. http://comancheclub.com/topic/48200-drag-link-lht-tie-rod-end-question/?hl=steering+wheel

I finally got to do a test drive this morning and the steering wheel was straight until I had to make a couple turns to get to my destination...while making those turns I noticed depending on the turn the steering wheel was tilted either to the left or the right and at times it will go back to straight...
HOrnbrod Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Hmmm...does this work on 97+ Cherokees as well? I don't know - never had the steering wheel off an airbag XJ to see if the steering wheel has the option to be rotated or not. :dunno:
