Akmj90 Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 So I have a 1990 4x4 with the 4.0 and a auto it was running great until I took it into the car wash and now the Comanche will not shift out of first. I checked the fuse and got underneath it and found nothing obvious disconnected. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
Crash Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 Check/adjust/replace TPS. Disco TCU and attempt to shift manually. Adjust TV cable. Etc.
gogmorgo Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 There are a couple others threads about similar issues from this week. Worth a read.
64 Cheyenne Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Had this issue once on an XJ, cleaned/dried connectors at TB, problem went away.
Akmj90 Posted January 6, 2016 Author Posted January 6, 2016 Well I just unhooked and sprayed down the connectors of the tps, no luck as of yet. I disconnected the fuse to the tcu and it does not allow me to shift manually. Still trying stuff out.
Akmj90 Posted January 6, 2016 Author Posted January 6, 2016 Well I found out I pulled the wrong tcu fuse I found the real one and sure enuff I pull it and not I can shift it manually so my best guess is I need a new tcu.
64 Cheyenne Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Still think you should swap out the TPS, it's a common symptom for AW4 not shifting.
gogmorgo Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Forgot that.^^^ When my tps went, the first clue was that my aw4 was shifting as though I had the skinny pedal firmly against the floor. It did shift, but only after sitting on the rev limiter for a bit.

MJCARENA Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Did you wash the engine down. I had the same problem on my XJ after cleaning the engine. There is a connector for the trans on the passenger side of the engine that got wet ,and when I took it apart and dried it all was well again.
Akmj90 Posted January 8, 2016 Author Posted January 8, 2016 I just drove it through a automatic car wash in November in Alaska then I shipped the Comanche had it delivered to my door a month later and it did not magically fix it's self for some reason..... I am trying to track down a tcu now, I will look at the plug on the passenger side of the engine now.
