Recommended Posts

just trying to figure out what to keep my eye open for i have a 2.8l v6 and the ax5 matched with the np207 i have read a lot that these are not very reliable.  i plan on doing some offroading and cruising around town what transmissions bolt up to my engine and what are my transfer case options. id like to keep it a standard. thanks in advance for any advice.

I have no actual experience with those engines, transmissions, or transfer-cases, but from what i have gathered..... :typing:  :crossfingers:

  • the 2.8 v6 is unreliable and has a bolt in swap with a later camaro (3.4L ?)
  • the AX5 has a good rep
  • the NP207 can be replaced with a NP231

yeah my 2.8 only has like 93k on it and runs fine when it goes i plan to do a 3.4 or 3.1 which ever i can find for the right price and i have seen on a lot of sites that the ax5 is pretty weak for any off road use.

AX4/AX5 is pretty good for being a light duty transmission,i beat the crap out of my AX4 wheeling on 33s and it never let me down.

I've since swapped in an AX15 which is much stronger but it's a project getting it in there.

well now I know I got at least one good component on my 86, the ax5. As far as the 2.8 goes, I grew up with these damn engines and I know that if you maintain them well, they will last a good long life. Mine is a fairly "fresh" 2.8L off a late 80s Camaro. If and when it dies, I will go 3.4L or 5.7L SBC...
