Redrockracer1019
Hello. I am a new member to this site. I am seeking wisdom an guidance not criticism an slander. I am the proud owner of a 1990 jeep Comanche. It is 4x4 an has an 6.5in lift.. I happily put just at 327k miles of thrils adventures. U name it places I went there... But that was before the crank shaft seised in place. Resently I acquired a 2000 jeep Cherokee with 125k miles for $600 with a title... It's a 2wd however... An that it had been rolled. When i bought the cherokee the guy couldn't get it to start after it had sat for a while. I having been a jeep tour mechanic the past 6 years in Sedona az I knew... So I put a fuel pump in it and a brand new battery.. an it started right up.. And i would just sell it an buy an year correct new replacememt 4.7 stroker for an renix bit the cherokees been rolled and its a awd.. So ive already pulled my comanche motor.. Here's my project an my delima. I have the renix 4.0 removed .. I have started isolating the wireing harnesses as well as started removing the interior dash boards in both vechicles. I need help with this. The Cherokee is a 2wd I want to retain my asain warner 4 speed 4x4 trans in my comanche an transfer case if at all possible. As its fairly new only has 60k miles on it.. The 4.0 ho I'm pretty sure has a aw4 as well from taking multiple pictures of the 2 transmissions an comparing them there identical just updated sensors different wireing. An ones onle 2wd... In my Comanche i started removing the dash trying to remove everything from engine bay. except for steering an brakes.. An what ever transmission wireing an tcu.. So the question is. Is it possible to retain my 1990 trans??? just swap the entire 2000 in to the Comanche right? Dash all engine bay wireing lights... I want to swap Cherokee dash an I have too but I want to keep my steering column shift so I need to keep the wireing for the multi function switch the ingnition switch horn... Hi do I get around that wireing issue with the obd2 demand for computer communication with ever electron gismo an doo hicky in the vechicle... Also another thing I wanna cheat are keeping my wireing going to rear taillights. Call me lazy but i really don't see the point in running all new wireing back there.. I already need to wire up a trailer hook up as it is. Getting off topic. So i Can't get my head around how to adapt my trans harness an or what to leave behind in Comanche inside an out coullm shift wireing.. b4 I start pulling Cherokee motor am get that ready to go.. I wanted to strip my Comanche completely clean nothing there but the abasloutly essentials an lay in all Cherokee wireing an dash board first. Then I wanna install the 4.0HO after I put a new rear main in am intake gasket am timing cover gasket new water pump everything new while I can with engine out.. I've been eye balling my old busted gear box leaking all over the one in the Cherokee looks the same I think I'm going to swap that out an I was looking at the brake booster in the Cherokee that looks masive compared to the 90s booster maybe even update the calipes I don't see the need.. Would like to convert to rear disk.. Off topic again... So. I Need to move on past this transmission wireing an steering collumn shifter wireimg... holding me up.. I've read some forms on renix to 4.0HO swap.. Here's a breif summary an the end result of what route I chose to do.if Posted 21 January 2011 - 07:34 PM Renix to HO swap: Method #1: swap in the HO engine/head, keep the Renix intake/exhaust/TB, etc (have to somehow match intake to head) Method #2: swap in the HO engine/head/manifolds/TB, but keep the Renix control & sensors Method #3: swap in the HO engine/head/manifolds & HO engine control system in. So I went with option 3... But I have a transmission problem. Or do I? Couldn't find anything about this issue.. Trying to keep a 90's trans with a 2000 engine... Can it be done?. I'm pretty sure it can! I have wire loom almost completely bremoved on all engine bay harness in Comanche I can provide pictures upon request... Any an all help. Greatly appreciated... Thank you! 64 Cheyenne
I'm not totally sure but I think your 90 tranny has a stand alone computer (under kick panel on the right side) that controls your AW4.and if you can get the wiring to mate up, I don't see why you couldnt use the older tranny with the newer computer. Or you could possibly go the stand alone route and use old aw4 computer by its self, although this might cause problems with the 2000 computer not being hooked to a tranny, probably need to switch wiring. Redrockracer1019
Yes I located the aw4 controlled passenger side under kick pannel below glove box. Well I aim to swap dash board regardless. Pretty vague on your response. Tho I do appreciate it. I'm under the impression the obd2 2000 4.0HO engine computer communicates with the trans as well doesn't it. Yes I think I.ll just try to change the sensorage on the trans an use the full Cherokee harness.. An jsut run the 2 wires for the transfer case light on the dash.. I plan to swap the vaccume controled front diff to change to a old man emu cable activated front diff aqushakuator... Does anyone have any susjestions. Doe anyone like painless make a wireing kit for this swap..
64 Cheyenne
Actually I think your going the right direction with the 2000 ecu controlling your 90 tranny. Only thing Id suggest is forgo the posi lock and just completely lock it over or do a one piece conversion. In the later years Jeep did away with the two piece axle in favor of the one piece for simplicity and reliability, seems that fuel mileage numbers weren't changed enough to complain about. Redrockracer1019
Not clear.. Thank info tho useful did not answer my question. Just gave me info about the transmission as if I were taking my 90 aw4 an putting it in a 2000 Cherokee when in fact I'm doing the complete opposite. How do I put the 2000 Cherokee engine an all wireing an dash an get around the steering column wireing how then do I retain the 90's aw4 4x4 trans... Thanks? gogmorgo
As I understand it, you were trying to convert your Renix MJ to HO with the parts from the 2000 XJ, yes? So once you've got all the stuff swapped over, you need to get the Renix AW4 to work in the MJ that is effectively now a 2000 XJ. Now you've got me confused. How is putting a Renix AW4 into a 2000 XJ different from putting a Renix AW4 into a 2000 XJ?
Redrockracer1019
Well for starters that other website link with everything thing you need to know about the aw4. Said I would need to machine the transmission because it doesn't have the port drilled for the speed wheel pick up or something... I'm.. An there's a 21 spline an a 23 spline.. So I can't just take my t case off am adapt that to the 2000 xj aw4.. This projects pissing me off I'm considering dropping in a turbo 400 an a crate 350 back to points an a timing light.. Thought it was an easy swap to do thought it could be done.. Not gaining any ground on this I'm over it between my 99 camaro v6 swap to 5.3 vortec an my 61 Baja bug with a 98 imprezia 2.2. I'm done with Frankenstein projects... I'm gonna put it on eBay f it
64 Cheyenne
Why get pissy about it? Get the correct tranny and move on. I understand why you want to keep the 90 tranny but really? is it worth it? Fix the MJ... sellin it don't fix it.
Redrockracer1019
Update. Comanche dash board completely removed. All dash harnesses fuse box all wireing gone.. Need to still remove the HVAC box... I wanted to retain the steering column shifter apposed to the 2000 xj center colum arm rest shifter... But I want the cruze control steering wheel.. Some feat to pull off.. BaCK to my aw4 dellima... Can someone produce some kinda wireing diagram of how to power the aw4.. I'm thinking just swap all the harness from the xj even trans wireing just change updated sensors on tranny?... Is my gauges going to work.. Mph.. Hummm ....? shelbyluvv
Sell your trans and transfer combo and pick up the correct transmission. The wiring is super temperamental in the 97-99 and even more so with the 00-01s. You will thank yourself for swapping the transmissions later on. I did a 97+ conversion, if this little issue has you this twisted up I suggest you read the DIY section on 97+ swaps and get a good feel for it before you go any further. This may not be the swap for you. NOTHING in the MJ will work with the newer wiring. Not even the fuel tank or tail light wiring.
