Jeepjeff859
In the next few weeks I will be starting a 4.0 swap using a engine out of a 1994 grand Cherokee and was planning in raiding a 1993 Cherokee at the junk yard for parts, I already have the dash completely out of the 1986 Comanche to fix some wiring problems. So my questions are what I need to take from the Cherokee at the junk yard to swap into my Comanche
ChuckP
Maybe this will help. From what I've read it's very labor intensive to do the 4.0 swap on the 86 Comanche because it's a tad shorter than the rest. Meaning you have to modify the firewall and a ton of parts are different.1986 2.5L to 4.0L swap threads. http://comancheclub.com/topic/39539-links-for-25l-to-40l-swap/
Rockfrog
You can also find similar info looking at 84-86 Cherokee 4.0L swaps as well. The firewall was changed for 87 to make room for the added length of the 6cyl. Even then it's still a tight fit stock. You will have to do some cutting and welding to make it fit. jimoshel
Anything can be done but sometimes the question begs to be asked, "Why?" You want a 4.0 in a MJ, buy one. There's enough of them already out there. Just saying.
Jeepjeff859
I already know about the fire wall. What i was planning on doing is since i have the dash out already is go to the junk yard and get a entire harness from a 93 cherokee and swap the entire harness into the MJ and just splice it into the lights. I just don't know if a 93 harness will have the same connectors under the dash as a 86 harness. i do have a haynes book so i guess it wouldnt be that hard to lay the diagrams next to each other to see what i need to splice into. The engine I'm getting is a 4.0 out of a 1994 grand cherokee and the guy is giving me everything on it, AC, cruise control and if i want the computer and harness. my list for the junk yard from the 1993 cherokee is engine harness dash harness computer maybe the transmission ( i already have a NP231 t case) maybe the transmission cross member if mine won't work motor mounts radiator radiator cross memember
Jeepjeff859
Another question is will a transmission from a 1993 Cherokee work with a 1994 grand Cherokee motor
Rockfrog
Yes, the 93-98 Grand Cherokee 4.0L is the same motor used in the MJ/XJ/YJ/ZJ ... Things got funky after that though. There were even a few AX-15 equipped ZJ's produced in the earlier years.
Jeepjeff859
That would be nice to find
JeepsOLot
1993 was the only year ZJ Grands had the option of the AX15. The front clip supports need to be swapped over. I might be doing this with my '86 that doesn't have an engine or tranny in it now. I have an '89 parts MJ that I'm taking the 4.0/AW4 out of and putting it in the '86. I have a complete MJ harness and engine compartment to get anything I need to make it work in the '86. It will be fun, no doubt!! Jerry
Jeepjeff859
Today I spent a couple hours take the hole front of the jeep off and taking as much as possible off the engine to make it easier to get it out, tomorrow I'm going to the junk yard to get the engine harness and the dash harness along with motor mounts and a radiator, I have heard that I also need to get a new hood latch is this true?
