Rust-free 1989 Comanche 4.0 Pioneer with Manual Trans in Chicago

I'm having a really hard time posting this but I went out and bought a boat this weekend and it's pretty heavy.  Too heavy for the comanche, unfortunately.

First the facts, then the backstory:

  • 1989 Jeep Comanche Pioneer 4.0L
  • 5-speed manual
  • Zero rust, totally solid floorboards, body and long bed
  • Carpet currently pulled out - buyer can easily inspect the floors,
  • Speedo stopped working 1 year ago.  I have a used replacement sitting on a shelf that I've been planning to pop in but was waiting until I pulled apart the rest of the interior to do the carpet,
  • Hell's Creek 3 inch lift with add-a-leaf and new hydro shocks - just enough lift to improve ground clearance and improve the looks but have very little impact on drivability/handling (it actually improved),
  • Manual windows, locks (all working),
  • Front driver's side fender and corner light need to be repaired/replaced.  Must have rubbed or bumped something, before my time.

This truck runs and runs and runs.  I'd drive it anywhere, anytime.  The only engine problem I've EVER had is that on a really sunny summer day it can be hard to restart if the sun is beating down on the hood.  It can be remedied by opening the hood for about a minute and then it will start right up.  I believe this relates to a design flaw with the location of one of the injectors.  I might be wrong.  Either way, it's never left me high and dry.

History:

This truck was purchased new in 1989 in Bend, OR.  It was driven by a gentleman for 23 years until he passed it along to his grandson in Portland who had helped him maintain and keep the truck nice over the years.  Obviously, he continued to take good care of it until he and his wife had a child at which point he realized he needed something bigger.  He put this up on craiglist and when I saw it in Chicago I had to have it.  It seemed like the best Comanche I had seen in a long time - no rust, fairly low miles, 4 liter and 5-speed.  Yes!  I called him, got a good feeling and used some miles to buy a one-way ticket to Portland.  I was at the airport 2 hours later and test driving it an hour after that.  His concern was that when it got up to speed on the highway it would get a death shake and he thought there must be something terribly wrong with it.  I could get it to happen, so I bought it and took it to a local mechanic to have all the fluids emptied/flushed/changed and then the next morning I set off an adventure home to Chicago by way of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin.  The death rattle happened 3 times between Oregon and Wyoming and nearly shook the truck right off the road.  It was one of the scarier moments I recall behind the wheel of a vehicle!  The 3rd dealer I stopped by, this one in Gillette, Wyoming, diagnosed it as a steering damper and $50 in parts and hour of labor later I was back on the road.  From this point forward, it was like driving a Cadillac!

Since I've had the Comanche it's made the trek from Chicago to Buffalo, NY (530 miles) 3 times without so much as a hiccup.  I seldom take it off road but when I do it seldom even needs 4WD - which works great, by the way.

I wanted to give the folks at CC a chance before I post it on Craigslist.  I'm not 100% sure how to price it, based on MJs (especially around here) typically being buckets of rust - this one definitely isn't.  That being said, don't be afraid to reach out and make a reasonable offer.

Located in Chicago, Illinois

Price: $4,500

I'll get some interior pics posted.  The older pics are at the bottom, before adding the new tires/springs/shocks.

Thanks for taking a look at my Comanche!  If you'd like to make it yours, send me a PM or email me at brian.k.johnson at gee-mail.  You can also call/text 773-715-2205.

It's pouring out right now but when that's finished, interior photos to come.

Have you drove this truck around Northwest Indiana lately? I was out with mine a few weeks back and saw a red pioneer like this one... We were both shocked seeing another Comanche on the road!! Good luck with sale. Beautiful truck! Oh ya I second the rain out, it's pouring!

I think I've fallen in love... Manual, six cylinder, 4WD, sliding rear window, long bed, no rust. And best of all it's in the same state as I am!

I would like to take a look at it in person. I will contact you tomorrow at a more decent hour to set up a time to look at it.

Really hoping I can make this work.

McHenry!? Now that's my neck of the woods. I'm from McHenry, live in Harvard, work in Woodstock. Had I not had a giant project currently, nor the Diesel MJ, I would pick this up in a heartbeat.

That truck looks like it should have a D44 also. Do you know what it has in it?
