Quick Question: Upper Control Arms, WJ?

Recommended Posts

With an '87 MJ (less than 3" lift) I will likely replace the Lower Control Arms,

with the Later model WJ (oval-bushing-type) control arms.

Do the Upper Control Arms from the WJ also fit?

Do they make for an improvement?

Thanks

Using the lower WJ arms have made a tremendous improvement on our trucks...but I believe there is a frame bracket modification you must make in order to use the upper ones... let me search for a minute...

WTF? the search engine says "....the illegal words "WJ" have been removed from your search...."

Oh well, maybe someone else can get the thread for you.

Started working on my WJ arm conversion last night. I ground the bushings down properly but ran into clearance issues on the axle end. The upper side of the lower arm ran into the shock mount bracket at the axle. I did a little trimming and clearancing with a hammer but I still think there should be more room there for full suspension travel. Ive never read of this being an issue during this conversion. Has anyone else run into this? I only did one of the lower arms last night as I ran out of time. Thanks.

Pete, is the second pic showing that you hammered the top of the arms flatter to increase clearance? I think maybe that combined with proper trimming should do the trick. I plan to do the upper arms as well and plan to do the body clearancing as shown in the other post. I just always assumed the lower arms were bolt in after grinding the bushings as I've never read any different here or elsewhere. Its all good though. It will work out.

I got them in without these mods, but as soon as I found that they touched, I trimmed off (not hammered) the part of the arm that would have contacted the body and trimmed the shock mount where the arm would have made contact on the axle side.  I was just looking for maximum droop. :D
