daking
Who here has an off-road trailer? Pictures? I'm looking to build a tandem axle trailer. Using 33" off-road tires. The front part of trailer will look like many other single axle off-rad trailers. But I want a flat bed, to carry an ATV, or 2 bikes. Nothing too long. I'll do a state of the art drawing using the MS-Pant :) to give you all a visual of my idea. Just looking for ideas, or pictures of you all's current trailers. dunnc1991
I've never had one, but I feel like a tandem axle wouldn't be all that great off road. Again, no experience with this at all. I think if you ran a single 3500# axle you'd have plenty of carrying capacity and still should have enough room and maintain more maneuverability. jimoshel
I've drug a 16ft double axle trailer over some pretty rough country with no problem. The biggy is not the axles but the coupling. The regular ball type just doesn't have enough play for a lot of twisting. Take a look at the military pintle loop type coupling. For what you want, a single axle is more than sufficient. daking
jimoshel, you mean something like this? Image Not Found dunnc1991, I agree. a short trailer with one axle would be better for hard core off-roading. I won't be taking this trailer on extreme trails. Mostly sand around here, and the dual axles with 4 tires should provide great flotation. The trailer ideas I have are still very short. cruiser54, Those look good. I'll call them and get some numbers. Thanks Looks like most american based off-road trailers are short one axle units. However, in Australia, it looks like there are a few different builds with tandem axle off-road trailers. These are about the size I'm looking to build, maybe a tad longer. I was hoping someone on here had a trailer they would like to discuss the benefits and issues, ,and so on...
yxmj
Here is a pic about 7 years old, I have built quite a few trailers over the years. Single 3500 lb axle 31" BFG AT on steel Jeep rims. Carried all we supplies and gear we needed for 10 days of fishing about 200 klicks from the closest human. If you look carefully you can see a "Baja" trail bike tucked in there as well. Still have the trailer and still running strong to this day....My only tip.....I add shocks to all the trailers it really helps keep your load on track on the rough trails. ( And if you can get a 5 x 4.5 axle so that like here you can run jeep tires so that spares are plentiful ....here we have 2)
