I am trying to determine the year of a 4.0 engine I have and did not label when I pulled it. Any help appreciated.

The tag on the distributor reads  53021352M

                                                9    357        47   88       553537

                                              PLT B/CODE  YR  DATE  560  NUM

I am assuming this means it is an 1988. Anyone help?

Tnx Noriyon. I suspected that's what it was but wasn't sure. One thing threw me off it has the Chrysler  Penta Star logo all over it. I didn't think they started doing that until '91 or 2.

The best way to tell what engine block you have is by the code stamped on the block below the spark plug holes.

Example:  401MX12

Decoded:

* 4 = Year (1994)
* 01 = Month (January)
* MX = Engine Type/Fuel System/Compression Ratio (MX is a 243 CID, multi-port fuel injection system with 8.8:1 ratio
* 12 = Day of month of engine build

Casting numbers are also on the 4.0 blocks as follows:

Year       Casting No
1987-90 53005535
1991-95 53008405
1996-97 53020569
1998-98 53010341
1999-04 53010449
