Roggesound
So I pulled my starter today to work on an issue I was having with the starter not running right away when I turned the key. After I got it out, I noticed that there's an open hole in the crank case directly above the starter. Should there be something in that hole, like a soft plug or something? What is its function? Thanks for any info. I'm putting in a new starter in the morning, so if that needs to be plugged up, I need to do it before then.

JeepsOLot
Freeze plug? If that's the case, you would have lost a lot of coolant! Jerry
Roggesound
Well, I lose a lot of oil, and this hole is right above the starter, near the oil pan, and there was a bunch of oily junk on top of the starter. Of course, that could have come from any number of places. I'd just like to hear from someone who remembers taking their starter out and seeing the hole, or seeing a plug, or knows why that hole is there. daking
It's not a freeze plug.
Roggesound
I agree with you. But what is it?
Roggesound
Here's a video I found on the youtubes. At about 2 minutes and 30 seconds you'll see the hole after he takes the starter out. His doesn't have a plug either, so I guess I'm just going to put my new starter in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCyBrn0k7eA
HOrnbrod
The below is the "hole" the OP is referring to. I have no idea what it's for unless it's there for assembly purposes, but it shouldn't be plugged. Image Not Found

mjeff87
It's factory, used in the engine assembly line process....there's another one at the front of the block adjacent to the timing cover as well. There is/was a TSB out for it calling for a plug, if you are so inclined..... http://www.freewebs.com/powellskater12/044259.pdf edit: I never bothered with mine, it never caused me any problems. Thank you! That's very good info. I already put in the starter, but next time I'm under there, maybe I'll jam a plug in there.
