jimoshel
Got a '86 MJ with the 2.8. Bad mechanical fuel pump. I really don't feel like spending $50 for a new one. Got a dozen XJ with the in tank electric fuel pump. Anybody know if the electric, in tank fuel pump from a '84-'86 XJ would work in the fuel tank of a '86 MJ? I could just go out and pull one and try it but it's cold, wet and windy out there. Any comments? :dunno: :dunno:
yxmj
I think you would have to remove the tank and install the whole take and pump together.....then somehow you have to get a trigger to turn the pump on and off.... :hmm: ...I think the pump will supply more fuel than the carb needs..... :hmm: ....... You don't have an old SB Chevy kicken around? I think that Mech pump is the same
HOrnbrod
Too much pressure for the carbed 2.6 Jim and no regulator. New pumps are only ~$20 shipped on Ebay like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Jeep-V6-Fuel-Pump-New-Cherokee-Comanche-Wagoneer-Grand-Wagoneer-2-8L-/370453848725?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5640c52295&vxp=mtr
jimoshel
I'm thinking somebody switched engines in this thing B4 I got it. I have a fuel pump like the one in your pic and it doesn't fit.Gonna have to check block casting numbers or something and see what it is. And as for the pressure, just get a inline regulator. adjustable. I know it's got my frustration level at a new high. I have a 500 CI Cadillac engine I rebuilt a year ago just sitting in the corner. waiting for something to put it in.
Incommando
Put it in an envelope and send it to me :brows:

Now that I'd love to see. An 8.2 liter V8 in an MJ. You might have to do a little firewall modification and beef up the suspension a little bit, but it can be done. Think the BA10 Peugeot tranny can handle it?
jimoshel
A little more detail. A couple years ago I bought a 1986 MJ, 2.8, 5speed, 4WD. Drove it until a rod went thru the block. It sat for a year. I found a 1986 S10 with a 2.8 engine, wrecked but the engine ran good. I pulled the MJ engine and sold it in a load of scrap. Normally I keep the old stuff until I got it running again but this time I didn't. Pulled the engine out of the S10 and installed it into the MJ. Noticed there were some minor differences but got everything back together, ALMOST. The new engine had a after market electric fuel pump and the old engine was the original mechanical FP..I had removed the mech FP from the old engine. It didn't fit the replacement block. That's where I'm at now. Either the MJ-S10 engines were different, or, somebody swapped one of the engines for something else.
Strokermjcomanche
It had to be an 85 or older s-10 engine because 86 s-10s had a TBI setup and no place on the block for the fuel pump to bolt to . I've had an 86 s-10 since I was15 and put 3 2.8s in before I went with the 3.4 . Try an 85 or older pump .
jimoshel
That sounds very probable. Would explain it. I said it half joking but the Caddy installation is sounding better all the time.
jimoshel
I'm going to park this project, maybe try to sell it. Now that I seem to be feeling better I'm going to get on the diesel conversion again and see if I can get it going. Any body want to buy a '86 MJ?
