odd question

Recommended Posts

When I bought my truck it came with 35's on it. Is it normal for the truck to not want to roll with bigger tires? I have to give it some extra gas just to get it rolling. When I let off the accelerator it almost feels like I am lightly applying the brakes. Just want some feedback before I do anything to it.

I assume your truck is an automatic, so it has a bit of forward pull when in gear. It could be a number of things, dragging brakes, bad wheel bearings, improper differential gearing. A 35 is a big tire, and alot of mass to move. I wouldn't be too terribly concerned about it once you've checked what I mentioned above and they are good.

What is the best way to check the differential gears? Also what is the average fuel milage for the 4.0? The only thing that I have done to date to the truck is pull off the awful looking JK flares that the PO riveted on and replaced all the fluids in it. This is my first jeep and first 4 wheel drive. I have very little knowledge about it right now. One thing I wanted to add is how grateful I am to finding the club. Every one here is willing to help out and that just something I find totally awesome. I wanted to thank everyone for just being a great group of guys.

I echo your praises of the CC forum. Great group of folks, friendly and willing to help.

Anyways PFCLiest pretty well covered it. But the best way to check your gearing, assuming they have not been changed from stock is to find the tag on the diff or check for stamps on the housing. If it likely has after market gears then pull the diff covers and count teeth.

Someone else can probably weigh in on fuel mileage as I just now started driving our 4.0l but I would guess 13-17 mpg with alot of factors that can effect that. If your running 35" tires I would say 10mpg if your lucky.

Good info here: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/faq-how-do-i-determine-my-gear-ratio-615380/ Good luck!

Thanks guys will be my project for tomorrow. You are pretty accurate with your guess about fuel milage rusty. Mine is averaging just about 10. I was looking at both front and back axles. From the pictures I found on here I believe I have Dana 44's on both. When I check the gearing am I wanting both to be the same?

Being an 89, it could either be a Peugeot ba 10/5, or an ax15. Being a 4.0 5 speed, factory gearing would be 3.07. If it still has these, then with 35's your truck will be a dog. A gear swap should definitely be in your future.

No way that you have a D44 front unless someone has done some serious swapping. If your front diff cover looks like your rear diff cover I would bet that you have a D30 front/ d35 rear. That is also the most common combo by far. With a D35 in general and for sure with 35's on it the consensus is that spending any money in that axle is throwing money away. A swap to a later XJ 8.25 or Explorer 8.8 would serve you much better for not much more money.

I am not positive on what axles I have. I said that it looks like the pictures I saw of the 44. I know very little about jeeps at this point. Trying to learn everything I can about it before I start throwing money into it.
