86XL
On my 1986 custom, the trim that surrounds the door windows, the black plastic, is peeling. So I peeled what I could and there is polished stainless steel, I believe to be. Has anyone figured out how to remove the remainder of the plastic? I would love to have a polished trim on my doors. johnj92131
Should be able to buff it off with something like a green pad. Might want to try a paint remover?
86XL
I tied to put one of the shorter pieces in a hot oven and let it set for 30 min at 300 degrees. The plastic got soft but didnt help. Just wondering if anyone has tried to remove it.
shelbyluvv
Pick up some Aircraft stripper spray in a can and some Goo gone. Spray with the stripper and let them sit for a hour, Peel the loose stuff off. Rinse and repeat until it is all off. Wipe them down with the Goo Gone after they are shinny. Then clean with soapy warm water. I did it to my 86. I thought I had a write up on it somewhere on here. Here is a quick few pics. Make sure you completely remove then from your doors like I did or you will have no paint left on your doors!

PEEJ
How's one go about removing the trim prior to stripping without damaging it?Is there a trick to it?Any special tools? Thanks
shelbyluvv
One would take off the door panel then remove everything in the door except the door latch. There are no special tools required to do this. You should also order new window wipes and felts when you do this.
Motorcharge
Aircraft stripper works but can damage the chrome. Clothing steamer with a wand will make removing it easy without causing damage. Also works well on window tint, stickers, decals, molding, ect. You can pick them up for $20-30 at Walmart, Target, ect.
shelbyluvv
It is stainless steel. I have done it and it doesn't hurt them at all. A steamer is not going to remove the glue they used on the moldings. I tried everything from steam, heat, brake fluid, paint thinner, goof off and goo gone. The only thing that worked was the aircraft stripper. It still took about 8 applications to get all the black plastic and glue off.
