Comangi
So I'm going to pull the front axle apart on my '86 MJ to put new inner seals in it. I'm not sure, but I want to be prepared for what axle shafts I'm dealing with. I read somewhere that the passenger side axle shaft is a 2-piece? Is this true? Does anyone have any info on this? Thanks so much!
Incommando
It is two piece. When you engage 4wd a vacuum switch pulls the two parts together. It is called Central Axle Disconnect and it sucks. A common mod is to replace that shaft with a 1-piece shaft.
Comangi
got it. Is it an easy mod? Do I just find a pre '95 pass side D30 shaft without ABS?
ComancheKid45
All 95+ will be solid and accept the larger u joints. Youll have to upgrade the inner seal on that side as well
Comangi
In read about the inner seal. I was on rock auto looking at seals. I can't for the life of me, figure out which dang seal I need!. https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1181382,parttype,2336 On here, it looks like I want "USA STANDARD GEAR Part # USA30141 Axle Seal - InnerFront; 4WD; Dana 30; Reverse Rotation" if I get a solid axle to swap in. "TIMKEN Part # 710204 More Info {#83500199}Front Right; 4WD; Spicer 30-F; Disconnect" if I keep the stocker?
Dadinator
I just picked up a newer front axle from a junkyard from a Cherokee and called it quits. just make sure that it has the right gear ratio.
Comangi
yeah, I'm not ready for that just yet. From what I can tell, the PO put in a solid axle. What I figure, is that he didn't pay attention to the seal, which is why it's leaking like crazy. So I just need to figure out which is the correct inner seal. I'm pretty sure it's the: "USA STANDARD GEAR Part # USA30141 Axle Seal - InnerFront; 4WD; Dana 30; Reverse Rotation" Because it doesn't mention disconnect. Blue XJ
Warn also sells a conversion seal. At least they did years ago. It goes in the disconnect housing where the current seal is, it has a smaller ID to seal on the smaller 1 piece shaft. I used that setup for years with no issue. Another benefit, you wouldn't have to disconnect your steering and disassemble the driver side as well to pull the carrier out to install a seal. You'd just need to pull the passenger side shaft out. Blue XJ
A quick google search came up with this for the 'conversion' seal. Spicer 46470 Chicago Rawhide 11800(CR 11800)
1987Comanche
On the '96 D30 I picked up replacing the inner seals would require removing the R&P. 1 piece axle shafts though so not sure if it applies to all years.
86FUBAR
When I installed my 1 piece axle I jut cleaned the housings out real good and installed extreme alloy outer axle seals and just over filled the diff a bit and ran it like that for 3 years with out a problem till I regeared and had the right seals installed .
