There is one mounted to the bellhousing unplugged but has a different plug end. Are there different models of that sensor. The one pixtured has 2 wires and the one bolted to the trans has 3 !

Herada12 Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 So here is the crank sensor that was plugged in but not bolted to the bellhousing. An here is the one that was bolted to the bellhousing but not plugged in. The plug is different too!
Eagle Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 The first one is for a 1986 thru 1990 engine, with the Renix system. The second is for the 1991 and newer engines with the Chrysler injection/ignition system. Also, the flywheels are different, because the two CPS types don't operate the same. What year is the Jeep you bought? It might have a replacement engine. On the right side of the block, forward of the distributor IIRC, there should be a flat area with a bunch of codes stamped into it. If you can find it, post what it says and it may tell us what year the engine is. If it wasn't running when you bought it, my guess is that you have a Renix model, the previous owner swapped in a newer engine, and he didn't realize that the ignition and injection systems aren't compatible. So the new engine wouldn't start, he got frustrated, and passed the problem on to you to sort out.
1987Comanche Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Makes me wonder what flywheel is in the truck, Renix or HO. If you pull the CPS and rubber plug out of the bell housing you should be able to tell which one. If I remember correctly Renix CPS tone ring has a lot of teeth and HO tone ring is smooth with machined pockets for the CPS to pick up. If he didn't know the CPS needed to be changed I'm betting it has the HO flywheel. You'll have to pull the engine or trans to put the correct one in.
87MJTIM Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 In this thread and your slave cylinder thread, it confirms that the PO changed the bell housing from a 94+ AX15. He must have kept the CPS from the bellhousing. You will need to swap the CPS off the BH with the socond. (If he swapped engines too, all bets are off.)

Herada12 Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 I'm sure the motor is factory! Its all too clean and NOTHING is missing underhood. So Id say you are all right, it has a 94+ bellhousing. Now the big question is what flywheel did this fella use!!!!!
87MJTIM Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Some questions you should find out: What trans did the truck originally come with - BA10 or AX15? Did the PO swap the full trans or just the BH? Is the engine original? I would assume he only changed the trans/BH with the CPS and kept the Renix flywheel.

The first # is yr. 2nd/3rd is month 4/5 is engine type 6/7 is day. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/engine-block-code-help-1027819/ That make the Jeep a later production unit. Prob came with the AX15. (The parts manual give a trans change from BA to AX as mid October.)
Herada12 Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 Well I just talked to the guy I got it from. He says its definitely the original engine. And he says it ran before he swapped the tranny. Yes, transmission! He said it had the BA10 before. He said he thought he used the flywheel that was on the engine but hes not totally sure. From the pictures I took i'm thinking its got the wrong one on it. I'm going to put the right crank sensor on tomorrow Nd see what happens though.

Herada12 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Well guys. I ordered a LUK flywheel from ebay tonight and a used master/slave setup for the ax15. The hydraulics were $40 shipped. And gauranteed to work or money back. Not bad at all.
