zfinger Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Currently working on a 00' XJ swap into my 90' MJ. I'm using the 231 off the 90', which had a speedo cable up into the cluster. The 00' uses a sensor? How do I make this work?
Eagle Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Remove the cable holder from the transfer case and install the sender in its place.
HOrnbrod Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Currently working on a 00' XJ swap into my 90' MJ. How much of the 00 XJ are you swapping in? Dash, wiring harness, and OBD2 system?

HOrnbrod Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Then you'll need the speedo gear / sensor housing from a 97 and up 242 tcase, but I'm not sure it will fit your 231 tcase.

HOrnbrod Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 00 XJ could have either TC; assumed your 00 donor XJ donor had the 242. How about the 90 TC spline count compatibility? I forget........
Jeepman Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 VSS is the same for both the 231 and the 242.. Are you installing all the Harness and everything or Just the Why are you not using the one on the 00XJ???? You can grab one of these http://www.wranglerforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=235230&thumb=1&d=1365794762 I have used them in the past when doing a 4.0L conversion and keeping the Stock T-case and style Speedo gear...
Rockfrog Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 If you are using the 00 dash and wiring/pcm ... Use the 00 speed sensor. If you are using the 90 dash/wiring/PCM then use the 90's cable drive .... It will drop right in and index as normal.
zfinger Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 I'm using a complete 00' swap, minus the t-case. The donor I got had a 231 with SYE and Tom Woods driveshaft that someone else got to before me. My 90' t-case already has a SYE so it wasn't an issue really. Splines matched up between my 00' AW4 and my 90' 231.
Jeepman Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 You should have no trouble finding the VSS in the Junkyard... Here is a Pic of the style you need... http://www.stu-offroad.com/engine/speedo/speed5.jpg
