jgrabner
I have rachet locker in my front axle, When I'm in 2wd no noise that can be heard from inside the cab but once I engage 4wd I believe it is the locker that is popping real loud and not engaging. I Removed the front drive shaft and in 4wd no sounds are made so I figure it is not the TC causing the sound even though inside the cab it sounds like it is right under me. Please let me know if this is a locker failure as I suspect? I'll know for sure this weekend when I get around to pulling the diff cover and replacing/repairing the locker. Jeep Driver
The chain in your TC is stretched........fried......
banshee
Almost the same here found carrier bearing loose and I mean just a little, but enough to not allow proper locker alignment causing massively loud popping as it jumps and realigns
Incommando
A broken locker will do that, too.
jgrabner
I'll pull the cover this weekend to know for sure. I was originally expecting the TC but with the driveshaft out and in 4 or 4l there is no issue/Popping with the TC, making me look at the locker. I have a spare locker so no cash out of my pocket
Jeep Driver
What makes you think that the TC would pop without the DS installed? It wouldn't, there's no tension on the chain.

jgrabner
Well, Jeep Driver your right it is my TC. I pulled my diff and I have a detroit not a powerloc as I thought and It is working fine. Now I got to decide if I want to pull my TC case and do a reseal as it is leaking and replace the chain or find a used TC. I can find NP231 for 150 on online around here. I'm thinking the best would be just to buy the chain and rebuild kit and put the work in but it would save a lot of time if I could find a decent one without having to rebuild. What is a good way to tell if the TC is in good shape when it is out of the vehicle?
yxmj
If you are going the rebuild way...there are chains ( and kits) that are wider that would give you ( I believe if my memory is right ) a chain about 30% stronger....google it....the info and part numbers are out there
