huck731
So through a weird series of events (me buying a 99 escort, my girlfriends car killing itself, me buying a ranger) I have found myself in a 97 for ranger "reggie white" ed. basically a base with green paint and it originally had some lame graphics on it. it is the ford 2.3l 4 banger, 5 speed manual, 2wd. now I REALLY miss my 91 sportruck. I think I might be making a for trade ad soon because I have really been wanting to get into a 4.0l, 5 speed, 2wd Comanche. oh, the coolest thing about the ranger is that it has 254k, doesn't leak oil, doesn't burn oil, is relatively light on rust considering it's a Wisconsin truck! big66440
After being a tech for a while and seeing the mess Ford made in the engine compartments of the Ranger I swore myself to never own a Ford product, still not nearly as terrible as the GM 2.2 in S10/ Sonoma pick ups but still a head ache , not just because I'm a hardcore Mopar fan but working on a comparable Dakota was actually enjoyable,,, hope you get the MJ you want. johnj92131
I purchased a 1990 Mazda B2200 stretched cab new. Kept it till 1998, when the nose of the crankshaft broke off. Years later when it came time to look for another truck, I looked for a Comanche, because I wanted a little bigger payload and the long box. Did look at a V6 Ranger, but the Ranger just did not seem as strong. Must admit the interior was much better and the extra room of the stretched cab is very attractive. Also gave the V8 Dakota a good look, more power, short bed, nice cab. In the end, I picked up a nice Comanche for $1100 that has served my well for the last 7 or 8 years. But today, if I were looking for an older truck, I would likely get a Ranger. Lots more of them to chose from and parts are easier to find. 87Warrior
I've been stuck driving a company Ranger of some sort every day for the last 6 years. I put about 33K miles on one a year. I hate every minute I am in the cab of that forsaken truck. My current truck is a 2011 2.3L 2wd.... I like the MJ much better. More comfort, more leg room, fewer blind spots, more low end grunt, smoother engine control, reliable transmission, smoother ride....and this is my comparison to a 2.5L MJ! The Ranger does go down the highway at 80mph a little easier though. That said, the Ranger has never left me stranded (neither has the MJ) over that many miles so it seems it may be a reliable vehicle....
huck731
well, I can't complain about the ranger to much. I have wanted one since high school just because my stepdad had two while I was growing up and a H.S. friend had one. great little truck. just doesn't have the soul of a Comanche, and I totally agree on the passenger compartment room. to reach the peddles, my arms are at a very uncomfortable angle! Comanche County
One of these might be neat to tinker with....http://savannah.craigslist.org/cto/4776469514.html

But it does look nice and the ad is well done. Saw one on craigslist in California a month ago for less than $2k, but did not run. Still a good looking truck with only one owner. I will see about locating the ad.
Guest
The only way I would consider owning a Ranger would be one of the first two "boxy" styled ones. The jelly bean front end on the third gen ones sort of nixed my enthusiasm for the truck. Not sure what it is about boxy looking trucks that's so appealing. I absolutely abhore the first gen Dakotas though for their styling, but love the first redesign; probably my only "modern" choice of truck if I had to get one. Pic related, my (almost) favorite color combo. Swap the midnight blue for "intense" blue though, and put some agressive tires on it. Those little Magnum V6's can take a beating, and the 4WD system isn't too shoddy either.
Brickmiata
Funny, I sold my 4.0 5spd rwd ranger to buy my 4.0 5sp 4wd Comanche. The ranger was a great truck for reliability and low end grunt (4L would tow its own weight very happily) and had zero of the electrical issues I'm repairing on the jeep but it was the epitome of boring in my mind. I wouldn't trade back in a million years
