AeroNautical
Working on my buddies MJ today and was baffled at what this was. It looks like cruise control, it has a plunger reaching out to the throttle linkage, but I've never seen a CC on these trucks that look anything like this, they usually have a push rod that wraps around over the valve cover. It's an 89 2.5. There is no control for it in the cab, either. I also thought it could be a sensor that tells where the throttle is, like a TPS, but this box looks a bit complex for just that. Also found this at food lion the other day, had Jeep logos all over it. Pretty cool!
shelbyluvv
It's a kicker solenoid. Used to bump the idle up for power steering or air conditioning.
AeroNautical
Really?? From the factory this truck has neither, no power steering and not even an idler pulley for a compressor. What else would it need to idle higher for?
cruiser54
It's the ISC motor. Idle Speed Controller. They all had them.
shelbyluvv
I was about to type that also Cruiser. It is basically the IAC of the 2.5 engine. They will bump the idle up slightly when the ac is on or when turning the steering wheel while stopped. Like Cruiser said the all had them. cruiser54
I think it also positioned itself to have the throttle opened for optimal start the next time.
AeroNautical
Cool, I'll let him know. Thanks. He's thinking about putting power steering in it anyway, so it'll be of more use then I guess.
Jeep Driver
My replacement is for a 84 Caddy as they are not listed for the Comanche anymore. Many GM vehicles used the same idle controller.
