I'm assuming their a AW4 mated to a NP242.Acouple of questions,Are these good trans. and transfer case. Also theres a trans. switch on the dash that says POWER and COMFORT. Not sure about that either. Also the doner XJ has power windows/locks/tilt/cruise/ A/C/ power seats/and a few others things I'm not sure about,a thingy up between the viser clips and a switch on the front of the console Any idea what trim package it might of had?.Another ? I've read something about an extra cable going to the steering column,Is that an issue,Thanks
ggcnash
Not a renix guy, but everything should be a direct swap especially since you have a complete donor. Do a quick search Google- comancheclub.com and then your search criteria works a lot better then the search feature on tapatalk. There are several writeups that will answer your questions. ggcnash
I will also add that the AW4 and np 242 is a great combo the AW4 is a very Strong transmission IMHO got one in the wife's xj with 380k, no trans cooler, and not to mention it's been ragged on pretty hard. Now saying that it is a close to stock 97 xj 2" budget lift with 31's, but it put 2 older brothers and herself through high school and recently was in the parking lot for her college graduation! Now i know you said yours is an 88, but the internals of these things have changed very little if any over the years.
gogmorgo
The switch on the dash remaps shift points. On Power, it kicks down sooner and holds lower gears longer, shifting at a higher RPM. Comfort doesn't shift quite as hard and supposedly is better for fuel economy, but only a real stickler would notice much difference. Chryco eventually stopped putting the switch on, and defaulted to the power setting. If you search google, you should find many guides to locking it into power and not bothering with installing the switch. The "extra" cable that goes to the column is probably the ignition lockout, so you can't shift out of park without the key on. You might have to swap the column to maintain that function, but it likely won't matter all that much if you just leave it off... just beware that you won't have any way to prevent shifting out of park and curious children are curious. As for what will swap... just about everything. Unbolt from XJ, bolt onto MJ. You've got the donor right there so you should have everything you need, except a rear driveshaft. The MJ's is too long and the XJ's is too short. A decent driveshaft shop in your area should be able to shorten the MJ's at a reasonable price. There are a few writeups on here about the 4x4 swap. There's also a writeup or two on here or elsewhere on the internet about adding power windows, or whatever else you want to add from the XJ. Bypassing the Power/Comfort Switch on a Renix Jeep Remove and unplug the switch. In the harness are 3 wires One has a stripe, one is tan, and the other black. Make a 4" jumper wire with a male spade at each end. Plug one end in the cavity for the tan wire and the other in the cavity for the striped wire and you'll be in permanent Power mode. Stuff the harness back in and reinstall the switch for looks. If you happen to have a 91 or 92 XJ/MJ and it has the Power/Comfort switch, just jumper the Tan and Blue wires in the harness plug. NEVER include the black wire when jumpering!!!
