VTComanche
New to the forum and had a question for some of you more experianced MJ owners. I have a stock MJ and read the thread about the biggest tire that would fit with some rubbing being a 31x10.50x15.. I was going to order some super swampers and got a little worried when I read that super swampers tend to run their true size where as other manufacturers do not. These are the specific tires I was looking at: http://www.4wd.com/Jeep-Tires-Jeep-Tire-Accessories/31x10-5R15LT-IROK-ND.aspx?t_c=13&t_s=536&t_pt=101509&t_pn=SSTIND-06 Do you guys think these would fit without a lift if they actually run a true 31"? Thanks in advance..
yxmj
What wheel are you planing to mount them on?
VTComanche
Sorry forgot that..planning to just mount on stock wheels from an 88 comanche
dankicksass
The BFG 31s that came on my Jeep on stock steel wheels measure 29in. They rubbed like crazy.
Eagle
Sorry forgot that..planning to just mount on stock wheels from an 88 comanche 31s on factory rims will rub the lower control arms on sharp turns. The cure is to use LCAs from the WJ Grand Cherokee.
Incommando
The shoulder lugs on those are way too aggressive. You can sneak by with a street tread but even with spacers those will rub.
benjy_26
I rub the edges of my flares at full lock sometimes with my 31" BFG AT/KO's. I'm lifted 3", by the way.
ftpiercecracker1
Slightly off topic, but $130 a piece for tire as aggressive as that? That seems like a pretty stinkin good deal.

VTComanche
Yea seemed like a good buy.. Thanks guys, sounds like they'll fit but rub the lca's some which I'm fine with. And saw the rough country spacers so maybe I'll run those for the aggressive tread to help out a little

Then you will have a problem. 31x10.50s on factory rims fit inside the flares and sheet metal, and rub on the lower control arms. No aftermarket rims have as much backspacing as Jeep factory rims. That means your tires may not rub the lower control arms (which we can live with), but WILL probably smash into the flares and maybe the sheet metal when you turn. In addition, on those rims the tires almost certainly won't tuck up into the fender when the suspension compresses, they'll hit the flares. There's a reason why I have a shed full of factory Jeep rims ...
benjy_26
If you LIKE the way factory Jeep rims look on a MJ, that would work. I'm fully aware of the shortcomings of running aftermarket wheels on my Jeep. I like the way they look, and havent had to do much more than trim the inner liner and flare on the trailing edge of the fender. I SLIGHTLY rub under full compression and lock. I can live with that. Even if I totally FUBAR my front flares, they're easily replaceable with XJ flares and fenders. Again, not a huge deal to me.

Not a big deal to you, but could be a big deal to someone else (like me, for example) -- which is why I took the trouble to point it out before he has the tires mounted and then finds out he has to remove the flares and trim the sheet metal. If that's not a problem for him, at least he'll know what to expect. If it IS a problem for him ... at least he'll know what to expect.
benjy_26
Which is precisely why I listed that I'm running a 3" lift. Someone with a stock suspension will NOT be able to run the fitment I am without cutting.
Eagle
Even a 3" lift won't help unless you extend the bump stops to prevent the suspension from stuffing the tires into the flares and sheet metal.
benjy_26
Sorry, but I gotta disagree, at least with my set up. I havent bent sheet metal or ripped a flare off yet, despite being fully flexed several times and having no sway bars connected. Maybe my 3" coils are giving me more lift than advertised I AM running a 2.5, after all. I have a feeling most XJ coils are built with a heavier, loaded L6 truck in mind vs a stripped out, manny tranny 4 banger truck like mine (yay for base models!). dankicksass
I'd like to note that my 31s on stock rims (six spoke steel) rubbed the frame in the back on both sides when flexed or even just over bumps. Haven't seen anybody talk about that. The one non-stock rim I had on there was worse, rubbed more in the back.
benjy_26
I have no rubbing in the back, and that's with stock, tired 2wd leaves.

It hasn't been mentioned in this thread, but it has been discussed numerous times in other threads. When I used to wheel the '88 MJ with the 4-inch lift that was a normal occurrence. It didn't hurt anything, just left stripes of black rubber on the inner wheelwells when the suspension got twisted up. It wouldn't be an issue in street driving, and probably not even mild "wheeling" such as fire trails.
1989 Eliminator
So I also plan on lifting my MJ 5" with rustys suspension kit (Not SOA) and putting 32's on it. From what I'm hearing I will rub a good amount since the 32's would be bigger than 31's. So, should I go with 31's instead? :dunno:
benjy_26
It's not an MJ, but my ZJ with 32's on Canyons rubs quite a bit on the inside of the rear wheel wells. It doesnt hurt anything, just gotta hit it with black paint from time to time.

Also, do you plan to trim?? I have an XJ on deep wheels and 33's on 5" of lift (Rusty's long arms and RE coils) and it has NO rub anywhere due to the aggressive trimming. Incommando
5" of lift will clear 32's with stock rims with no rubbing.
1989 Eliminator
Yes they are stock 15" rims and I'm still tryin to find the best deal for 32's. And no i do not want to trim!
