Belt Routing For Frankenstien'd 4.0 Mj

I'm nervous about my belt routing. Long story short, I just did a 99+ intake upgrade on an already Frankenstein assembled engine, and had put a power steering pump from a 96 on the engine to fit the new intake. Here is how I currently have my belt routed...when I started the car and drove it after the swap, it ran great, but the temp gauge does not work, where it did work before. I find it hard to believe that the sensor went bad during the course of the swap. My fear is the water pump is not pumping because it is turning wrong or something, but logically this doesn't make sense as the belt is going to turn it only one way any way.

 

To my knowledge, all accessories except the P/S pump are 98 components

Notice the idler is on the driver side, between the power steering and the crank. This is the only idler pulley I have, and this is the exact route of belt I currently have.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This is the other belt route I'm coming up with, but I do not have the second idler pulley next to the A/C...

I'm just afraid that something is wrong, and the temp gauge isn't working because for some reason the belt is routed wrong. The WP is turning the same direction in both routing images...I just need reassurance I'm not an idiot, LOL.

I doubt the guage isn't working because of the belt routing . The engine is still turning the pump in the same direction as you pointed out. Therefore the water is still getting circulated and the engine is getting warm so the guage should still read . Did you put any Teflon tape on the threads of the sensor ?

You said you swapped the intake on the engine, did you happen to unplug the sensor and maybe not get it plugged back in good? Is the sensor still on the back corner of the head or have you moved it up to the thermostat housing like 97+? It's unlikely but possible it could have gone out more likely that either it didn't get plugged back in good, got broken, or a wire is getting pinched somewhere grounding out the signal.

I have the same setup but it's OBD1 - this is how I routed the belts. H2O pump must turn ccw. Your belt routing is correct so that's not the problem. Pull the output wire off the sensor (left rear cylinder head), and touch it to ground on the head with the IGN ON. Do you get any temp gauge meter deflection?

My temp sensor is on the front of the engine as it is a 98

 

I had previously tested it like you're saying, and as expected itnpegged the gauge full hot. I grabbed a couple extra sensors at the junkyard today. I'll be installing them after I finish up the exhaust. Thanks for the help guys!

See the above post, but I have a fresh wire running from where the old sensor was to the front of the engine where the new one is. I'll post back when I swap sensors.
