pettus253
So I'm new to the page and novice to say the least about wheeling.... Anyways, I recently traded a set of tires for a running 1991 MJ. It's 2wd and has the 2.5L engine and auto trans. I believe the dana 35 it has now has 4:10 gears. I've come across a pretty good deal ($100) for a Dana 30 and a Chrysler 8.25 with 29 spline shafts already set up for SOA. Both axles have 3.55 gears in them. I'm installing a 4.5" lift and 33x12.5R15 tires. I'm just wondering how it's going to drive with the 3.55 gears with it being a 4 cylinder. I'm not in any hurry to complete the 4x4 coversion so I haven't purchased the transfer case yet, and don't plan on doing so anytime soon. Will the 3.55 gears be okay, or should I upgrade to a different ratio sooner than later? This truck isn't going to be a daily driver by any means. Any information would be greatly appreciated. 88whitemanche
Saposebly from your engine and trans combo your sapose to have 4.56 gears... I have a 4cyl 5speed with 4.10s with a 4.5" lift and 32s and at times I wish I had more gear.... 3.55s will feel underpowered and a cow offroad... mnkyboy
I ran 3.55 with 33s for a few years, it sucked but it went down the road. Mines a stick shift, I couldnt imagine driving like that with an auto. I went to 4.88 and its much better, I'm currently going up in tire size so I'm going to 5.38.

Sounds like stock late model XJ axles, the rear is soa but the perches are in the wrong spot so you will need to move them to fit your MJ.

pettus253
Yeah the axles are from a 99 XJ. What's involved with changing ing the perches? Remove, center, reweld?
pettus253
And looks like I'll be getting new gears in the future
benjy_26
I have 31's and 3.55's in mine with an AX4. It's not HORRIBLE, but I would like some lower gears, if nor for outright speed, then at least for more control while going slow.
