GHayduke
Hello, the other day my 98 swap MJ would not start. I finally tried putting it in neutral and it started right up. Drove it a couple days like this. So I guessed Neutral safety switch on trans. I checked it on the weekend and it was a little loose on the trans and could shift back and forth a 1/4 or less. we tried it both forward and back & it started, so we tightened it up in the middle of the range. If we made it too tight the gear shift would not move out of park. The issue was resolved for a few days, now every 10th start or so- no starter and I have to put it in Neural to start it again? Intermittent issue. Could this be a related cable issue? Anyone seen this before? Any help would be great...
GHayduke
The neutral safety switch was replaced last winter during my swap. The original one broke getting it off the trans. The battery, battery cables and starter are also all new in the last 6 months. Could the NSS springs be gummed up after 6 months of street only driving? I read other threads saying to rebuild / clean it... but it's new so I wonder if there's other stuff to try first.

Blue XJ
I'd take it apart and clean it. It definitely sounds like an issue with the NSS.
cruiser54
How's the adjustment?
GHayduke
I bought the NSS cheap off the web somewhere. I'll try cleaning and greasing it when I have a chance to take it apart. If I shift from park to neural to park it then starts just fine. Is there a write-up somewhere on how to adjust it? Other than rocking it back and forth, I don't know how to adjust it. When we did rock it back and forth, we had reverse lights and starter worked regardless of the position.
cruiser54
Try rotating it a bit clockwise with the lever in R position until the reverse lights go out. Then go counter-clockwise just a smidge til the reverse lights come on.
