Aftermarket Stereo Going Into "protect" Mode

I've got a Kenwood stereo that goes into protect mode, requiring I manually reset it.  Then it's fine for a while.

 

My truck is a 1991 4.0 auto 2wd.  It did not have a stereo from the factory but I think the one that was in it when I bought it was dealer installed.  The truck is very unmolested.  I've done some looking around under the dash, and can't find any hokey connections.

 

The factory stereo connector is still on it and I used an adapter harness to put in the Kenwood.

 

It has happened 4-5 times now, and seems to be related to me pushing the brake pedal.  Doesn't do it every time, and doesn't seem to matter how hard I push.

 

I'm competent with electrical work.  Before I start chasing this, has anyone ever experienced it?

Sounds to me that when depressing the brake you hit or move a wire that is causing this? But I'm sure that you have check this kind of thing already? If the brake is clear of hitting or moving any wire then my second guess is that it has something to do with while pressing the brake your brake lights turn on cause some electrical quirk. That's just my two cents.

I don't have more electrical expertise but thought I give you what I would think would cause it to help you diagnose yourself. I'm not much I'm sorry.

 

What I would do is make sure that grounds for all wiring are good, and that there are all correct fuses in the fuse box and check for any blown ones. After that check all your speaker wires go to and from the head unit. Look up what causes the unit to go into protect mode. Maybe a wire goes loose due to inertia while braking? Make sure the wires are secure

Perhaps you've got some current back-feeding through the grounds causing the stereo to falsely trigger?  It's got to be something simple.  Wires crossing or rubbing somewhere.

This.....

 

Or poor grounding throughout.

 

Did you go through all the grounds.......upgrade grounds........new cables.......clean all connections..etc.....?

 

 

If all else fails, I would run new wires to the fuse block and run a new ground to the radio.

 

 

Also, could be your antenna is not grounded.

Also, I would suspect your brake light wiring to be grounding out, not enough to blow a fuse but just enough for the sensitive electronics of the radio to sense a change in current or ground back-feeding.

Check the grounds at the tail lights.
