Katzer
Ok, new to site, new to comanches. Done some searching and can't find an answer. I have a 1989 2wd Comanche with a bad AX4, was going to swap in a 4X4 AX4 out of a 1985 Cherokee (because it has an external slave) and do a 4wd conversion. Evidently I didn't do enough research and I have discovered that the 1985 tranny doesn't have a crank positioning sensor. Anyway to make this work? Or did I waste my money? Thanks for any help and advice
87MJTIM
Please clarify. Did the new not come with one or is not equiped to fit? If it just did come with one, purchase one from one of the stores at www.
87Warrior
I assume the donor rig was carb'ed. You will need a bell housing with CPS provisions.
Katzer
The 1985 is not equipped to fit a CPS. I can swap the 1989 bellhousing onto the 1985 transmission and keep the CPS, but I will lose the External Slave. Anyway around this?

mvusse
Newer years have an external slave bell housing with CPS, but don't know what range. My current AX5 is out of a 1992 Wrangler it has has them.
Jeep Driver
You'll need the 94+ bell housing. I have one on an AX5 that I'm selling for $300 complete, I will sell and ship the bell housing alone for $150 plus shipping if you are interested. They are not necessarily easy to come by. Also comes with fork and TO bearing and front seal plate/bearing mount/sleeve. You'll need this plate/bearing sleeve also to make your swap- Image Not Found This is the housing that I will send you. Katzer
Thanks for all the input. I have discovered that I have a BW T-4 (not an AX5) and have no way to put a bellhousing with a CPS on it to put it in the Comanche. Same bellhousing to motor mounting but different bellhousing to tranny mounts. Maybe I should have kept my Scrambler! At least I understood all of it!!!!! Katzer
Ok after scouring the interweb for weeks I am having problems finding and AX5 out of a Comanche or Cherokee without having to drive 1000 miles to get it. There are lots of AX5 trannys and transfer cases out of wranglers that can be found locally. can the transfer case be reclocked to work? Will the transfer case shift linkage fall into the right spots with my comanche? would it be as simple as tapping new transfer case mounting holes? would a transfer case drop kit counter act the clocking angle? Someone dazzle me with their Comanche knowledge!!!! Beginning to lose my patience with this damn truck!!!!!!!
JeepcoMJ
86 is external with cps
Jeep Driver
86 is external with cps The 86 is completely different than that 94+, is it not? I suggest he look to the 94 and up, parts are cheaper and readily available.

The one thing you will need to be aware of........the shifter housing is different on some Wranglers. Image Not Found
JeepcoMJ
The 86 will use the external slave parts that he already has on his 85 bell. Cheaper. Oh. Fun fact. Your original bell should be set up to accept the 85 parts already. Just swap them all over. Pivot ball for throwout plate, studs for slave, done deal. JeepcoMJ
Driver, bearing plates are different between h.o. years and older...the bearings are bigger on the newer ax5. Your plate would leave slack in his trans and grenade it.

JeepcoMJ
Yes, but his year (85) trans cannot use the h.o. Bearing retainer/throwout guide as it is incapable of retaining the front cross shaft bearing. This will allow movement of the cross shaft and destruction of the transmission. Just printing out why your bearing retainer will not help him. The bell and stuff bolts up, but why spend the time or money when he can convert his internal slave bell to external slave with a couple studs, a handful of bolts, a hammer, and a punch?
