onlyinajeep726
What engine do you have and what year is your Jeep? That will help in identifying it. Edit: It looks a BA-10/5 5-speed, based on what I Googled, anyway. I'm assuming you have a 4.0L since the BA-10/5 is not found behind another other OEM engine offered by AMC/Jeep at that time. That puts your Jeep as a pre 1989.5 year model.
Mathias
An 1989 4.
yxmj
It is a BA The way it is bolted together to split apart in the last pic is the give away If you look at pic 2 an AX (5 or 15) would have a +/- 3/4" plate right at the seam shown in the pic
GirsMJ86
Yup, it's a pukey. I opened the first image and could easily tell from that bolted seam running along the bottom.
Mathias
So is this the ax15 and will it fit in my MJ? 1993 4.0 - Donor Cherokee http://s22.postimg.org/egax10pv5/0221141455.jpg http://s18.postimg.org/gxq2maycp/0221141456.jpg

Mathias
Thanks for all the help. So change of plans as my brother n law called dibs on the donor tranny already and i can't talk him out of it. I'm going to take his automatic tranny. It's the same year and everything as the donor aside from trannys. What would be required off the auto to make it work on my 89 mj?
onlyinajeep726
The AW4 automatic will bolt on fine, but the problem is the electronics. You'd have to swap your engine harness from one with an automatic and you'd have to have the appropriate TCM (transmission control module) to make it work. A far, far more involved swap than you probably want to get into. You couldn't use the '93 engine harness since it's OBD I and is not compatible with the Renix controlled stuff. Going from a manual to an automatic is 10x harder than from an automatic to a manual. You'd better off finding an AX-15.
Mathias
here's what the plan was... He has a 93 Cherokee 4.0 automatic - stock. We'll call this old red. A friend of his had a 93 Cherokee 4.0 manual - complete 6" lift, everything brand spanking new down to the break shoes. He bought the entire jeep after his friend wrecked it. this jeep is totaled (major body damage, motor and everything else still in excellent condition). We're gutting old red and putting everything from the friends wrecked jeep on to his. So now we have everything from old red and we're just going to put it all in my MJ cause this peice by peice stuff is giving me a headache. Is there any surprises we should watch out for when reinstalling old reds guts on to the MJ?
Mattwheels
Not at all, I'm swapping everything from my 92 donor to my 89 comanche, its a very simple bolt on process
Mathias
Thank you everybody for the responses, i am truely grateful.
onlyinajeep726
Ok, if you're planning on swapping everything over from the '93 automatic XJ, then you should be fine. But that means everything, computer, wiring harnesses (inside and out, including dash harness), possibly the steering column, etc... You'll have to get your rear drive shaft shortened and you'll have to make a special pig tail to connect the XJ dash harness to the MJ rear fuel pump/tail light harness (simple). Here's the link to make that special wiring pig tail to adapt the XJ wiring to the MJ wiring: http://comancheclub.com/topic/18588-xj-dash-harness-to-rear-mj-harness-wiring-guides/ Otherwise, everything should be straight forward. Having a complete donor is always a good thing.
