Jacob Ochs
Okay I have a 1986 jeep comanche and the 4wd is always on, I replaced the actuator and the housing and the light is still on and the 4wd does not work at all, any suggestions? The lights on but is it really always in 4WD? It would buck like crazy turning corners if it were.
Eagle
'86 was different from '87 and newer. The optional transfer case was an NP 228 (or 229), and that had an unusual control setup. Does your truck have Command-Trac or Selec-Trac?
cruiser54
Since he mentioned the actuator and housing, I assumed he has a CAD, which was on the part time systems but not on SelecTrac. And, if he had SelecTrac, he wouldn't have been able to turn the front driveshaft in 2WD.
Jacob Ochs
No I know it's in 2wd all the time but on the diagram you posted if I disconnect the green tube everything works correctly but the light is still on
cruiser54
Here's what I would do and have done on every one of those CAD axles. http://comancheclub.com/topic/17377-cad-fix-1/
GirsMJ86
If you do the CAD fix, the light won't work at all. So if you absolutely feel you need that light to know you are in 4WD, you need to find the vac issue. Like cruiser, I have done the fix to every CAD axle since that one in the write-up and just don't care about the light.

We don't need no stinkin' lights!!
Jacob Ochs
Okay! Thanks I'm gonna try to re run the vacuums on mine if that fails then ill do the CAD fix, any suggestions or links of where to get the vacuum tubing?
cruiser54
Save yourself the trouble and do the cAD fix. Less time invested and a better result. Vacuum is not the only issue with those front axles.
Jacob Ochs
So if I do the CAD fix will 2wd still work? Sorry I'm new to this, and how exactly does it work?
cruiser54
Yes, perfectly. The CAD system on the front axle was a feeble attempt to increase the fuel mileage on the XJs. Didn't work for that and had it's own set of issues. Factory eliminated it in about 1991. There is NO downside to doing the mod, except the light. And, I have a sneaking suspicion you are of above average intelligence and are perfectly capable of using the lever as in indicator in the light's absence. Jacob Ochs
Okay so what I'm getting from this is that I take of the c clip then move the forks over, re install the c clip then move the sleeve on the axle to the left then re install everything and disconnect all vacuum lines? cruiser54
Yup. And plug them at their source per the diagram previously posted.
