I am building a custom dash because mine is nasty I removed the dash and the whole climate control system now it just cranks and cranks but no fire seems to not be getting spark ... Are there any grounds or wires that need to be connected in the dash in order to run is there a way to wire your own ignition system ?

need more info. what did u do first? i would start with head gasket. start with basics. check compression. possibly incorrect adjustment valve adjustment. is it a 4 or 6 cylinder?

2.5 4 banger I didn't think you could adjust the valves on these ?

You can't -- they're hydraulic.

Why do you "think" you're not getting spark? It's easy to check, so check. An internal (some would say "infernal") combustion engine only needs three things to run: Fuel, air, and spark. Take away one of the three and you have a problem. Spark is easy to check, so verify. Either you have spark -- or you don't.

Did you remove the distributor from the block when doing the head gasket?

I did not remove the distributer but I did remove the cap however I marked it with tape so I lined it back up I know its getting fuel plugs are wet

Most of the engine controls, particularly the ignition system (i.e. spark) runs through the ignition switch, which is in the dash. If that's not hooked up and everything else is, you'll be able to crank it by turning the key, but it'll never fire.

Can I wire my own ignition system ? I have had nothing but bad luck with this things wiring because the po hacked up the harness after a packrat problem and never labeled anything

DO YOU HAVE SPARK?

HAVE YOU CHECKED?

After the backfire no spark

No spark -- or no start?

Have you removed a spark plug wire from the spark plug, and held it (carefully!) near a solid part of the engine while cranking to see if a spark jumps from the wire to the block?

Have you removed the coil-to-distributor wire from the distributor, put a screwdriver into the terminal at the end of the wire, and then checked to see if there's a spark between the screwdriver and the distributor cap terminal?

In other words ... HOW have you determined that there's no spark?

OK well I feel retarted aparintly when I put the cap back on the dizzy I didn't put the rotor on as I found it under the jeep .... So I put it back on and bam she runs ! No more overheating too !

That'll do it.

Glad you got it fixed.

I'm having a spark problem too. No spark but it turns over

Year? Engine?

Could be CPS.

Could be coil.

Could be ignition module.

Could be ECU.

Could be wiring (especially if you have the C101 connector on the firewall)

What have you tested so far, and how?
