Dadinator
I got a front dana 30 out of a 97 non abs Cherokee. 355 gears like what I've got. What do I need to do to get it in? I believe I read that the Ujoints are different. Is there one I need to buy to adapt? Anything else?
MrSimon
Is your truck currently 4x4 and you are just upgrading .... or are you converting a 2WD truck to 4WD?

Dadinator
replacing the old front axle that is boogered up and upgrading to non cad while I'm at it. It is already 4x4. (See my sig)
MrSimon
Since you are just replacing, I'm pretty sure its all plug and play. The control arms will bolt up, the driveshaft will bolt up, and all the brake stuff should be interchangeable as well. The steering, trackbar, and sway bar should also be the same. You will have to cap off your vaccum lines for the CAD, but that's the only change you'll have to make. Obviously you'll have to run the passenger side shaft from the new D30 ... the 2 piece shaft from the older one won't work. The older D30s had the smaller Ujoints, but they are interchangeable with the larger new ones .... just not as strong. Ideally you can run the shafts from the new axle and keep your drivers side shaft as a spare.
Dadinator
So stock ujoints will work then? I thought there were different ones I was supposed to get.
yxmj
96 and up use a bigger 760X U joint on the axle shaft itself....connecting the main shafts to the stub shafts (if your new axle is a 96 it will have them) so if you are installing the whole axle it is a non issue. Is the question in your first post about the drive shaft u-joints?
MrSimon
Axle shaft ujoints and driveshaft ujoints are interchangeable. But, its always a good idea to put in new ones (and beefier ones if you have the older 260 joints like come stock on MJs) when swapping stuff around. They aren't that expensive. Dadinator
Got the whole housing, so my question was originally about the driveshaft ujoints.
Blue XJ
Driveshaft ujoint will be the same. It should bolt right in if you use all the parts off the new one. If I'm not mistaken (which I could be) there is a different in the brakes between your 90 and the 99. The parts are the same, but I think the offset of the rotor is different so you'd have to use a rotor and wheel bearing off the same vehicle. Eagle
So stock ujoints will work then? I thought there were different ones I was supposed to get. There are u-joints, and then there are u-joints. The larger u-joints in the late-model axles are the u-joints in the axle shafts, between the inner and outer (stub) axles. The drive shaft u-joints are all the same, so unless you are replacing the u-joints in the axle shafts themselves, the newer axle should bolt right up to your existing drive shaft.
