New Transfer Case Today

Recommended Posts

Shouldn't be too bad, unless it's from a TJ or something except MJ or XJ. Count the teeth of the input! Renix is 21 spline and HO ('91 up) is 23 spline.

Not as simple as that. Spline count and input shaft length depend on what transmission it was behind. The only transmission behind which could be either 21 or 23 spline was the AW4, and I believe the changeover on that was 1989, at the same time the stick shift went from the Peugeot to the AX15, well before the switch to HO.

No worries, mates...

Came out of a 4.0 5sp AX15 MJ.

The old one was popping and then gave up the ghost. Would not engage anymore.  Axles are fine.  Chain is a problem, but don't know if it was the only one.

Picked one up at a JY and worked on swapping it today.

Went pretty smooth.

I didn't finish, but 90% there.  Just have to put the rear driveshaft, skid plate and exhaust hangers back on.

Then drain it and put new fluid in it.  Will do that later in the week.

I know about the differences, so made sure I had one from a good source.

Know a little about these trucks after all.  :brows:

My statement about hoping all went well, was because I just was hoping for no broken bolts, or glued together components that resisted coming apart. :fs1:

Should have it back up and running this week sometime depending on OT.

The AW4 changed over to 23 spline in 08/90. I bought a '90 XJ (build date 07/90) with 60,000 miles on it in '97. It had 4.0/AW4/NP242 (21 spline tcase is currently in my '87 MJ) The Changeover occurred with the HO changeover. 4x4 BA 10/5 are all 21 spline. AX-15 is 23 spline (I had to correct Novak back in '01 when they had BA10 and AX-15 and AX-5 mixed up)

Well, Crap!  :fs1:

Transfer case in and working.

However, axle not.

While still on the jack stands, I put it in 4x4 and let out the clutch, back wheels spinning, front driveshaft spinning, no weird noises coming from xfer case.

But...

Front wheels not moving.  CAD was bypassed long ago.  I just remembered that I recently welded it.  I've already taken a shower for tonight, so will check that another day.

Any other ideas?

Foolproof way to fix the CAD: add an oil seal on the passenger side of the pumpkin (NAPA part number on first post of my build thread in my signature), pull the CAD guts, and replace the two piece shaft with a single piece one.

Are you 100% positive that popping was coming from the Tcase?

With nothing holding the Tcase yoke from turning, the Tcase will be quite hard to get in/out of 4wd/2wd (just ask anyone who's had to roll without the front shaft for a bit).

If the front axle is fine at least one tire should be turning regardless. But, if you welded it ... I would say you blew something (carrier/spiders/pinion ... or inner part of axle shaft at seal).

  • 2 weeks later...

OK, so I welded it, but my welds sucked and gave way.  I didn't do it how I should have.   I am just replacing the whole thing.

The transfer case was bad and the new one is acting as it should.

However, now the CAD section where I welded it is broken and now boogered up.  So F it.  New non CAD axle coming my way.  Stupid design anyway!
