DirtyComanche
Normally I'd not care. The axle doesn't do much for me as I've never owned one and hardly consider bothering. But, I swear at least 40% of 'newer' (91+) XJs have 8.25s. And some CJ fag is trying to tell me that they are 'rare'. Do I just have really good luck at finding XJs with 8.25s? offroader461
No the majority of early XJ's had the D35 but if i remember in 98 they came standard....
CWLONGSHOT
They bagan uusing them about the time the HO 4.0 came out. then increased usage thru the last model year 2001. If you checked off ABS brakes, you got the D35 otherwise you got the 8.25. Some time around the change in 1997 they also went to 29 splines. I have no idea of actual numbers. Twisty
from my observations the newer ones mostly have 8.25s. My 1995 does, and a guy in my club who has a 1994 had one.

Eagle
The 27-spline 8.25 started showing up around 1992, but as already noted it was only on vehicles without ABS. ABS-equipped XJs had the Dana 35. I have no idea of percentages, but I would guess that by 1997 or so "most" (whatever that unscientific term means) XJs probably had ABS, and therefore "most" would have had the Dana 35. I know that my dealer was typically ordering XJs for stock with ABS because most buyers wanted it. I had to special order to get my 2000 w/o ABS. Now that I have remarried and the 2000 XJ Classic has become my wife's "car," I wish I had gotten ABS. I don't like it and I don't think I need it, but she grew up in a land with no snow in the winter ...

That's the funny thing about it. I browse the cherokee forums enough to know 8.25 = no ABS. Near as I can tell, ABS must not have been a popular option for jeeps in my area. I've only ever seen 2 cherokees in the boneyard that had ABS. I saw another 2 cherokees with 8.25s while going to get tranny fluid. And I didn't see any others. I just think this guy (that I mnetioned in the first post) is such a quack. He's considered the 'jeep god' on the few forums he frequents, and he seems to get quite annoyed when his word is challenged. He had a lot of fun when I showed him threads about XJs with the 2.5L/AW4 and 4.56 gears. Ah well. I couldn't find any production numbers to smear in his face, so I guess he'll just get to 'win' this one.
Twisty
Put a poll up on JF or NAXJA and ask which axle their XJ came with. I'm willing to put money on that after 1993 more XJs came with the 8.25 than the D35.

You can disagree with anyones comments with out making it a personal attack. Just state you opinion its still as valuable here as anyones. I am on many boards and am a director and mod on a few and this kind of strife and nonsense destroys a board. It literally chokes the life from it, people stop posting for fear of retaliator posts about what they say or think. Please keep it civil or go to PM's if you must. mjcanoe
As was mentioned earlier, 8 1/4's started showing up in dealers in '93. I recall being disappointed at that time when I did PDI's since I'm partial to Dana's. But they have proven themselves.

Did you read that as I'm attacking Eagle? Because I'm not. I'm mostly agreeing with him. My entire annoyance is directed to a member or a different forum who is doing a few things I disagree with. He is a dealer or lifts, runs a jeep shop, and is considered to be 'in the know'. More than a few times I've seen him use his reputation to commit some gross upselling. And nobody challenges it, oh, and he'll get nasty if you do.
