johnj92131
Looking to convert my 91 to OBDII. Has anyone here done this?
HOrnbrod
Several folks have done the 1997 and up dash swap by swapping in the OBD2 harness, PCM, and sensors. Lots of work for little gain IMO, unless you just have to have the newer dash.
johnj92131
Actually looking for the tunable ecu. Not the dash etc. Guess I need to talk with FlynRyan.
HOrnbrod
Just get a piggyback Unichip. Then you can map the IAT, CPS, TPS, and MAP signals any way you want them to match your engine. .
shelbyluvv
96 was a crossover year. It is OBDII with the old style dash. They will also have an airbag in the steering wheel. It is pretty much a bolt in for the dash and wiring.
neohic
... They will also have an airbag in the steering wheel... For future reference, would the computer know if the air bag was there and throw any goofy codes... or worse... turn on any lights?
shelbyluvv
To be honest I have no idea. The 97+ has a stand alone airbag controller under the console. It can be removed, fuses and relays pulled with no codes or lights. I don't see why the 96 would be any different.
johnj92131
Anyone know if the 96 cherokee OBDII engine computer is just plug and play substiture for the 95 and earlier OBD1 engine computer? With my 1996 Passat, the OBDII computer was a plug and play substiture for the OBDI computer. No extra wiring, just plug and play. Guess I could just hunt for the 96 computer on Ebay or the Pick and Pull, then plug it in and see if it works.
JeepcoMJ
96 ecu is a completely different style and plugin from the 91-95. not compatible. The dash harness, engine harness, steering column are all easily put in, the hardest part being making the wires match up at the driver footwell for fuel sending unit. You'd also need to have a H.O. fuel sending unit. The airbag in the 95-96 has no electronics whatsoever. It is a pendulum style airbag that is activated by sudden momentum, which causes a needle on the pendulum to break a piece of glass, starting a chemical procedure to deploy the airbag. You can easily do some fancy wiring to keep the gm saginaw column, but then you will NOT be able to use cruise control, as the 96 cruise control is activated by certain resistance through the switches on the face of the steeringwheel. You could mount those switches elsewhere to compensate for it, but frankly, the effort spent to do that vs. simply bolting in the column makes it not worthwhile. johnj92131
JeepcoMJ - Thanks for the information. Best/easiest thing for me is to get a piggyback Unichip - as Don suggested
johnj92131
Searching for a Unichip tuner in Calif or Az has come up with nothing. Even Hesco doesnt have it. Any other leads?
HOrnbrod
Call Jack at Unichip North America (Hillsboro, OR) @ 1-866-UNICHIP. For your 91, you will need the Unichip "Q" module. It's the hardwired version; there's no PnP Unichip for the Jeep I6 4.0L OBD1 (or OBD2 engine AFAIK). It's pretty easy to wire it into the ECU harness. He can also help you with a tuner in your local AO.
